How to get the National Board Certification for teachers?

Asked by lilaznchikka (88points) October 11th, 2010

I’m majoring in special education and wanting to become a special eduaction teacher. I recently graduated with an AA degree, and I’m planning on transferring to a university to get my BA degree. I was wondering how to get the national teacher’s certification?

Talk to the career counselors at the university. Used to be a state by state thing, that may have changed, and there may be different circumstances for special ed.
I just realized that this wasn’t very helpful, sorry.

Look at this web site, which is the organization for National Teaching standards.

Get a teaching job first, and get a few years under your belt before going for your boards. Here’s why: Teaching is a highly stressful career and many burn out within their first few years. Why go through the expense and stress of becoming Board Certified without truly knowing that this is your dream career? Secondly, a Board Certified Teacher is more expensive to hire than a non-BCT. Many school districts won’t hire a beginning teacher who costs more, simply due to budgets. On the other hand, many school districts will pay some or all fees associated with taking the Boards once you’re past your probationary period of employment.
