Any ideas for this space outside my bedroom door?

Asked by ChocolateReigns (5624points) October 14th, 2010

I have a basement bedroom. Our basement is kind of…messy. My room is just like a normal 14-year-old girl’s room, but the rest is really messy and pretty much used for storage. (If you saw it you’d think we’re crazy packrat people.) Outside my room is my dad’s wood shop. It’s bare concrete on the floor and there’s sawdust everywhere. There’s a space about 3 feet by 4 feet right outside my door that I just found out get to do whatever I want with. I’ve decided what I’m doing for the floor (I’ve always known I need something on the ground covering that bare concrete), but I need some ideas for the walls there! This is a small space, so it can’t be anything too big. I was thinking some squares of chalkboard paint would be cool. Any ideas?

Hang a mirror and hooks for jackets and purses, bookbags.

@MisPoovey Oooh, I like that idea! I’d add a shelf, where my sister can put anything that belongs in my room, without going in my room. I think I might do that.

I went to Home Depot off-season and got an outdoor trellis that had one broken piece for $5. Glued it to my concrete wall, covered with silk vines and use “shop hooks” to hang off it for scarves, bags, whatever….

Is there room for a desk, then you will have an area to do homework. Or do you have any hobbies that you can fit into that area.

I deffinantly like the shelf idea! Although I think first of all get one of thoughs door way beed things; thoughs are super awsome. A poster or to on the walls, mabey a rug with a funny saying, and dont forget the shelf so nobody has an exuse to go in your room! :)

I like the idea of mirrors, closets, and shelves.

I have a suggestion. Have you ever heard of Z-Brick? It’s thin brick that you can mortar to the wall and even make a “brick walk way” on the concrete floor. You can then hang some plants and a grow light or two to keep them happy. You end up with a little, inexpensive, garden area outside your door.

How about a whiteboard? We always used to have those outside our rooms in college. Worked nicely to record your mood, where you were, or to politely tell people not to bother you because you were working on… homework. Or other things…

People can also write notes on it to you late at night. Just handy all the way around.

Hang a beaded curtain, some mirrors to make the space look larger and a nice shoe rack that closes and some cubbies above it, with a small throw rug right outside the door.
This way you can remove your shoes before going in the room. (sawdust free zone) And when you have your door open you have a pretty view that is convenient. You can place things you always carry in the cubbies. School bags, books, purse, school id., wallet.
Add a nice little larva lamp so the colors play off the mirrors and beads and it may help you forget there is a work room around the corner.

@camertron looks like I’m going to do something like that because it’s the easiest.

@Pandora Wow, it’s almost like you had a picture of the space! You really figured out what I was describing. Thanks! I think I’ll do some of what you suggested, but I’ve got my mom’s penny-pincher-ness to work with. ;) A white-board, a rug on the ground, a not-so-normal color for the walls….I think this is coming together. Thanks all!
