Tell me what you know about the DFW area please.

Asked by sleepdoc (4700points) October 15th, 2010

My in-laws live in DFW so I am a bit familiar with the area, but what I really was wondering, for those who have lived there, is what area would you live in again or choose to live in and why?

I live in the FW part. Specifically around the TCU area. I love it here. I moved here back in Feb of this year so I have not been here too long. As far as where to live it depends. Dallas is for keeping up with the Jones’. However, if you are young and single it is perfect. There is tons of night life, and all sorts of other activities. I love Fort Worth because it is still a big city without the big city attitude. I live close to the cultural district in Fort Worth, and there are just so many different things to do in this area. I have really enjoyed my time here so far.

^^^^^^^^ I couldn’t have expressed it nearly as perfectly ! I will add that both cities have quiet suburbs and hot summers.

sleepdoc's avatar

@Aster… so you don’t think much of the Dallas area then?

Aster's avatar

Did u say you don’t think “much” of Dallas? I love North Dallas!

sleepdoc's avatar

@Aster .. yes thanks for the correction. North Dallas or Plano or Richardson or Allen or…?

I lived in Big D many years and can assure you there are scads of wonderful areas to live in. What I don’t know any more, since the city has grown so much, is about its traffic patterns and roads.

I lived north (Richardson), near SMU and in the Oak Lawn areaand liked all three.

Not sure anyone can tell you where to look—you just have to do it with the help of a realtor who keeps his/her car fully gassed.

As for FW, I grew up there and visit it pretty regularly. It’s a lovely town with lots of beautiful neighborhoods.

What I wouldn’t do, if I moved back to the DFW area, is live somewhere in the middle. I’d pick wither Dallas or Fort Worth.

Frisco and yes, around SMU. Greenville Ave is great for younger people also. Let’s not forget about Dallas eateries. OMG the food is outstanding . Tony Roma’s ribs, Aw ,Shucks seafood, Highland Park Cafeteria, Gordo’s Pizza. Prince’s burgers closed down.)-:

A friend of mine has a yummy restaurant in the Highland Park area. It was very nice around there, but honestly I am not very familiar with the area.

Aster's avatar

^^^^^^^^ their burgers are $12. lol !

sleepdoc's avatar

@JLeslie…. the only problem with that area is the priceyness. That is one of the most expesive real estate areas for what you get in the whole area!

Aster's avatar

@sleepdoc so what you’re wanting is reasonable real estate. I didn’t know that. I sure can’t answer; an agent is called for as AL said.

The summer heat is oppressive. I hate the airport, which is what I’ve seen the most of. Were I to move to TX, I think I would choose Austin or San Antonio. I know that’s not much to go on, but frankly, from what I’ve seen of DFW, there are better choices.

I lived in Dallas for 4 years from 2003 to 2007. For the first year, I lived way north in a suburb called Lewisville. I would not live there again, because then I moved into the central part of the city in an apartment complex just east of the North Central Expy. and just off Lemmon Ave. It was a mixed neighborhood, but my complex was safe.

I would live there again, because of the great cultural areas and events, the wonderful food all around (a good friend of mine has a very fancy restaurant downtown), the gay nightlife, and the many wonderful friends I still have there.

If you’re looking for a good area for real estate, you can’t go wrong with many areas in Oak Cliff, which is just south of the I-30 freeway. I have 3 friends who have done quite well there. The houses are older and often quite charming. The streets are treelined and beautiful.

If you have a family, then the best schools are in the Park cities, but Richardson also has excellent schools and is a nice place to live. My sister lives in Richardson.

sleepdoc's avatar

@Aster…. It is more complex than that. I am considering jobs in the area and which jobs I look at my be influenced by where I can live. Trying to get some ideas of areas I don’t know as well.

@IchtheosaurusRex… the heat is not as bad as in South Texas where I am now.

Aster's avatar

My ex inlaws had a gorgeous home in Oak Cliff. Decades ago.
The Park Cities are so nice but the taxes are astronomical.
And I agree it isn’t as hot as south or Central Texas. It’s not even as hot as Austin I don’t think.
Again, Frisco is extremely popular now. I think the homes are in the mid-$400’s ? Not sure. Maybe less.
Rockwall is popular and very interesting ; is it not right on Lake Ray Hubbard?

sleepdoc's avatar

@Aster Rockwall and Heath are very nice areas. The big problem is that unless you work on that side of the lake you are stuck taking the bridge back and forth.

Aster's avatar

^^^^^ true; be close to your job in a large metro area.

@sleepdoc : Are you concerned about schools?

sleepdoc's avatar

@hawaii jake… we have kids in school still so yes, but I also have a resource for sorting that out. My MIL works for a company which does educational resources. Her reps know the are real well in that regard.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@sleepdoc : Great. Glad to know you’ve got that worked out.

@sleepdoc I have a girlfriend who lives in Dallas and her child attends an amazing public school. The programs and opportunities are more than she expected, and the teachers are excellent. I’ll message her for you.

Here is what my girlfriend said, “my son is in the Mesquite school district. There are a lot of good school districts. It really just depends on where they are gonna work. The traffic can be yucky, so I’d start with where they’d be working and go from there. North, east, or west.. But not Dallas ISD or anywhere south…” she continues on about why not to go south, but I won’t bother to copy and paste it here.

I definitely would live there if my husband could make enough money for me to visit San Diego as frequently as I now do. It wouldn’t really be much different than living in Northern California, except cheaper. My brother lives in Fort Worth.

Aster's avatar

^^^^^^^^^ Northern California is MUCH more scenic? than DFW lol

Frisco and Keller are up and coming and supposedly good schools. I love Denton, though….it has a mix of city and country. It’s smack dab in the middle of Fort Worth and Dalls-closer to Oklahoma. You could go see the Flaming Lips in a heartbeat, or go to the rodeo In Ft. Worth, or to the Dallas nightclubs (or Greenville Ave)! If you stay in Denton, you’ll have to settle for hippie bars and live music- oh and lots of artsy coffee shops which I honestly love

Moving can be stressful. Good luck with your decision!
