Appearance of the Japanese school girl uniform, US navy inspired or not?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) October 16th, 2010

Something that always amazed me was how come most Japanese school girl uniforms look awfully like a some feminine version of the US navy ”Crackerjack” uniform? Did this come about from WWII when I suspect the US navy was a dominant present in Japan while Uncle Sam cowed the Red Sun to Americanize it, and seeing how Japanese society is suppose to have been more the warrior and honor class, the Crackerjack was seen as a mantel of power? Or was it just a coincidence that the uniform ended up looking a lot like the US nave designed it?

The Japanese uniforms are actually based on European formal military wear – the common boys’ uniform is an imitation of Prussian military dress, and the girls’ is an adaptation of European navy dress.

The uniform styles of Japan have their roots in the Meiji reformation, some 60 years previous to the second world war and have no connection to “Uncle Sam cowing the Red Sun” (whatever that actually means).

@the100thmonkey I think you’re right. The Japanese school uniform is based on sailor dress, hence “Sailor Moon.”

I would like to sincerely thank whoever designed it.

Variations of the “cracker jack” uniform are common all over the world.

@ratboy That’s not a sailor fuku though, just a hot Asian in a typical (albeit suggestive) Western-looking school uniform.

This is very interesting topics. As you guess, I think after Word War II, they imported many education system from America. That is including not only education system but style such as cloth, uniform. To uniform kids, to decide cloth what they wear. After that, many high school kids mixing with pop culture, so it has become and look awfully like a some feminine version of the US navy. Currently, it looks and changes symbol of sexy and hot costume. Just see how crazy they are. It is all sold on a site. http://bit.ly/eKCkmG http://bit.ly/iarVxE http://bit.ly/er4UGU That may be art!! @rts486 But who at the design 1st? Uncle Sam or some other?

@Ruth_Harada That last link seem more of a cross between the Catholic school girl uniforn and some version of private Oxford school uniform. American seem to think Japanese girls can make any uniforn sexy if it is a school gorl uniform <rubbing the chin>
