Appropriate attire for a graphic design interview?

Asked by ambos (496points) October 16th, 2010

I’m going on an interview next Friday for an in-house graphic design position. I’ve been working professionally for over 4 years. I’ve never worn a suit to an interview. I just purchased a houndstooth knee-length skirt and a dark blue button down. I’ll probably wear nude hose and closed toe heels. Is this appropriate? Do I need a jacket? Should I be wearing a suit?

I’m nervous about the interview and want to be comfortable, but also appropriate.

Will you be having cool weather the day of your interview? If so, wear a jacket. If not, don’t. I think you will be fine in what you are wearing.

Since it’s in-house, business attire would be appropriate. Black jacket of some sort would be in order.

It is OK for a graphic design candidate to look slightly artsy and unique.

Sounds very nice to me. Good luck! :)

Being a man, I don’t know much about womens’ clothing, but in my experience I always err on the side of being overdressed, even for a creative job (I’m a web designer).

As a guy going to an interview I always wear a suite and tie. I would rather be over dressed and lose the suite or the tie later than wish I had worn them and not have them. And don’t do what one guy did coming in to interview and stand in front of the business and dress in front of the plate glass window where we can all see you. Put your shirt on before you get there. :)

@sharpstick Too funny! In my much, much younger days, I adjusted my slip in front of what I thought was just a mirror. Turned out to be a two-way mirror, the whole office saw me adjusting. I didn’t get the job. So this is something not to do on a job interview.
