Spelling makes Fluther grumpy?

Asked by Joybird (3159points) October 17th, 2010

I see in the instructions that spelling errors make Fluther grumpy. Just how picky is Fluther about this as after suffering a severe episode of burn out with clinical depression the part of my brain the controls spelling is somewhat fried. Add to that perimenopause and we definitely have a bit of a noun selection/spelling dilemma…..is that how you spell dilemma? What to do…what to do?

Just do your best. That is all you can do. Fluther doesn’t like text speak so please avoid using it here. I’m not a great speller either, but try to use my spell check before I hit the enter button. Welcome and have a great time here.

I have the same problem and I keep a very large dictionary next to my puter just to make grumpyfish less grumpy.

Just try to pay attention to the little red lines as you’re writing text. I think, however, that the grumpiness is directed at those with a complete disregard for spelling as a whole and the prevalence of “txt speak” on the web.

[mod says] Welcome to Fluther! We’re not too grumpy, but we are a little more concerned about writing standards than many other sites on the web. Generally, we just want you to do your best to write clearly, so that it’s easily readable and understandable.

* Don’t use txtspk (though an occasional “lol” is fine).
* Use proper capitalization (beginnings of sentences, “I” statements, proper nouns).
* Use appropriate punctuation.

Everyone makes typos from time to time, or has a brain fart… we’re not so concerned about that. Don’t worry… we don’t bite. :)

@iamthemob Not everyone has a built in spell checker in their browser. Firefox does, which is great!

Thank god Chrome has spell check. I used to be a spelling champ and thought I was the only one whose aging brain decided it was no longer important. That thought-process area has been re-purposed (can I join middle management now?)
My understanding is; we can say we only did it “fur teh lulz” as long as it’s known we’re just lulzing for fun. (and only in Social or Meta categories)
Normal typos are accepted as human error.
Unless the typos lead to great lulz. Then they’re fair game.
Is that right, @augustlan ?

@Blueroses Pretty much. ;)

My spelling and grammar are atrocious, and I haven’t gotten yelled at, yet. I’m sure you have nothing to worry about. @augustlan and @Blueroses summed it up pretty nicely. :)

And you are not going to get banned for bad spelling. The worst that could happen is your question gets pushed to editing so you can clean it up or your quip is removed. The second rarely happens.

If you don’t have a browser that provides spell check, you can copy your question or answer into Word just to see if you have any typos or spelling mistakes. I often do this, and it works quite well. Of course, spell check won’t catch everything, but it will allow you to post with much greater confidence. Welcome to the wonderful world of Fluther, @Joybird. :)

Grumpyfish gets most grumpy about deliberate use of text-speak. I’m certain that genuine errors won’t get anyone banned.

I make spelling mistakes alot because I try to type so fast and I’m not a typist by anyone’s standards.

I make typos sometimes but it’s usually because Idon’;t see well – or type very well. Not spelling mistakes. But since downloading firefox, I find the spell check is great because it makes me review the post once again. Always a good thing with me. I’m an idiot – and this gives me an extra moment to reflect on the idiocy I am about to send into cyberspace; it should at least not have spelling mistakes and typos.

It’s imperfect, apparently.
