What are some of your favourite comfort TV programmes?

Asked by OpryLeigh (25305points) October 18th, 2010

Somtimes when I am feelin down or ill I want to watch something that I find comforting on TV. This is when my Michael Palin travel DVD’s come out or BBC comedies like Jam and Jerusalem or Keeping Mum etc.

Comfort TV to me is something that I don’t really have to concentrate too much on, I can watch the screen and listen to the words without having to take it all in, it gives me a chuckle without being offensive or rude (I don’t mind offensive or rude but there are times when more innocent humour is better suited to my mood), the characters are likable and the overall theme is positive and uplifting.

This is my idea of comfort, yours maybe different but what are some of your favourite programmes that fit your idea of comfort TV?

I second Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Also, History’s Mysteries, History Detectives, Ancient Mysteries, Unwrapped, Poirot and Bones.

@Samantha_Rae I loved Doug as a kid, I’d probably still enjoy it now!

For years and years it was The Andy Griffith Show—oh, to live in Mayberry near Andy and Opie and Aunt Bea. But I finally burned out on that, and now, old movies are my favorite comfort viewing.

@Leanne1986: senior year of college, my boyfriend at the time, burned me every episode so i’ll always have them to watch now :) awesome!

Man Vs Food, No Reservations, any cooking or food show really.

For me it’s Spongebob Squarepants, the equally cartoony Married with Children, Seinfeld, or Everybody Loves Raymond.

The only thing I ever watch is Top Gear. I split my sides laughing at those three. They’re hilarious.

Fraisier, House, Seinfeld, Star Trek, Law and Order and CSI whatever.

Night Court.

Monty Python, Iron Chef (especially the Japanese originals), Man vs Food, and No Reservations.

The SyFy New Years Twilight Zone marathon is up there too.

@Blondesjon hmmm…. we like the same shows. What’s your number? Can I give you a call? ;)

All the law and orders, csi’s, ncis, bones, criminal minds, and supernatural.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Red Dwarf. Black Adder, Kids in the Hall, Mr. Show, Dick Van Dyke, the Michael Palin travel DVDs, Ab Fab, The IT Crowd, Father Ted, Black Books, Spaced, Big Train, Doctor Who (but only the past episodes on DVD), Corner Gas (a Canadian sitcom)

I honestly don’t watch that much current TV. Of current shows, I watch Boardwalk Empire on HBO and Mad Men on AMC, with the occasional Food Network show, so for great swaths of the year I don’t watch TV at all.

@faye Add bones, criminal minds to my list. Night Court was funny, too.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. always makes me laugh, Law & Order SVU, House Hunters, Next Iron Chef, House, Glee, I used to watch the Travel Channel for comfort, but then it got cut off

@seazen Is Bones the one with Stephen Fry in it? I like that one.

The Cosby Show. It’s light, funny and G-rated.
