Any cold remedies you care to share?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19059points) October 18th, 2010

Alright, jellies, I need to stop being sick RIGHT NOW. I have way too much crap to do for this. So, any tips for me? Perhaps a concoction that you use to make it so you can at least get out of bed and go to work?

lemon juice, honey, and whiskey, equal parts. zinc lozenges, vitamin C. and take zicam every three hours; it really puts off a cold for me.

Assuming you are legal drinking age and have a bathtub.

Make some tea, add a shot of high proof schnapps or brandy.
Fill the tub with water as hot as you can tolerate. Get into the tub and sip the brandy. When the brandy is gone get out of the tub and go to bed.

oh, and a quart of hot and sour soup (Tom Yum)! clears the head, coats the throat, and gets you fluids!

vitamin c, humidifier, soup, green tea, gargling salt water (if throat is agitated as well)

I could list the usual assortment of cold medications, which I believe in – and Grandma’s recipes for chicken soup or tea and honey.

They are all fine.

But the best thing to do is to help your body take care of itself, and to help it you need to sleep and not fluther: drink tea with lemon and honey to relax, and your cold medicine. Then before bed time – take a good healthy shot of vodka, whiskey or whatever your poison is – but not beer or wine. Something clean and strong that doesn’t make your mind keep working all night. Make sure you go to the bathroom and don’t eat anything after 8 that evening. Make the room dark, comfortable and silent. Switch off the cell and PC. Sleep.

Theraflu works great. They have a day and night time formula.
For now some chamomile tea or a shot of brandy may help you sleep if you have no medicines.
For a stuffy nose drink ginger tea
Home med. Take at least 8 lemon and boil the rinds in about a quart of water. Once it becomes a bit thick add some honey to it till its thick like cough syrup. Have two tablespoons as often as you need it or at least every 4 hours.
Works best when a cold is starting.

I take a combination of generic Mucinex (chest and sinus relief) and Benadryl.
If my nose is still stuffed and preventing me from sleeping I take one spray of Afrin in one nostril and alternate nostrils each day so I don’t get addicted.
I also drink a lot of hot/warm decaffeinated liquids.
Sleep is an important part of the recovery. I try not to let the cold rob me of it.

Well, none of these answers will be remedies, but they will help you feel better. Colds usually last a week whether you treat them or not.

Go into a small bathroom, close the doors, and steam up the room with the hot water running (you are not in the shower, the water is too hot). I usually do this for a few minutes, take deep breaths, and then turn the water temp down a little to take my shower while still in the steamy room. This will loosen the phlegm you are congested with. Drixoral and Dimetapp are my drugs of choice, need to have both antihistamine and decongestant. These drugs combined usually make people tired, especially hours 2–4 after taking the pill if it is a 12 hour dose. By the way, be sure to check the dosage, many of these drugs are one pill every 12 hours. Also take 2 ibuprofen (400 mg) 3 if you weigh over 150. Do not get a combination pill of cold medicine and pain reliever. If you do, then you have to figure how medicated you are from the pain reliever whether it be ibuprofen or aceitamenophine and add another pill on your own if necessary of the pain relieving drug. I alwas recommend against these combination drugs of pain, congestion and cough, etc.

You should feel significantly better 1 hour after taking the meds, as long as they don’t make you sleepy. You will feel at your best 2 – 4 hours after taking the pills. Remember that your ibuprofen will wear off after 6 hours, so you might need to take more before your next 12 hour dose of Drixoral, although if it were me, for a cold, I would only take the ibuprofen once a day when I had to get my act together and be presentable. I prefer to take the least amount of meds possible.

Good luck.

A combination of remedies is best. Here are my favorites:

1. Advil Cold and Sinus—Works wonders for sinus congestion. But do not take it at night, as it’s been known to cause sleeplessness.
2. Lemon tea with honey. But in a pinch, hot water will do.
3. Chicken noodle soup—An oldie, but a goodie. It reduces the swelling in your throat.
4. Most importantly, plenty of bed rest.
