Maintaining metabolism while working in the office?

Asked by ShaChris23 (318points) October 20th, 2010

I’m a programmer, and part of my daily “job” is I have to sit around for extended period of time. I read from somewhere (I think Shell gas station) that if you are physically idle for more than X hours / minutes, the metabolism shuts down. This obviously is not good for people trying to stay fit and/or trying to lose weight.

Does anyone know what that magic X hours / minutes is?

Note: I usually get up every 25 minutes to just swing my arms and walk around for half a minute.

I’m sorry, I don’t have the exact answer, but take the arm swinging to another level: if you are able, take a short walk on a break or something. Get some fresh air, you can even do a few push ups and sit ups lol. But yes, you just have to move occasionally.

I read somewhere that people who fidget a lot tend to be in more shape than those who dont.
So maybe move around a little bit when youre in the office. Maybe walk to the OTHER side of the room to go to the restroom or to go get some water. Take the long route?
