Do the robot vacuum cleaners handle the household cleaning chores?

Asked by Tamara (159points) October 23rd, 2010

I have always been skeptic about them if they do a great job in vacuuming the hardwood and ceramic floors. Do you own one? or do you prefer the broom & dust pan? by doing it yourself.

I have a Roomba that I use upstairs. It does a pretty good job. I run it daily.

@BarnacleBill, Good to know! Thanks for sharing!

I own eight Roombas (five that work right now) and one Scooba. The Scooba was a birthday present; the Roombas were all acquired for free or cheap and “rehabilitated.”

I LOVE them!

We have dogs and cats and dust and the Roombas tackle it all, then the Scooba mops up after them!

There are caveats. The Roombas require maintenance. It takes less time to do than running a vacuum, but it does take time to do.

The batteries need special care and feeding and still may need replacement sooner than you like.

You do have to pick up a bit before running the Roomba and make sure plastic bags, cords, etc. aren’t in the way.

But, if you are willing to do this, they are wonderful- and very cool.

Oh- and if you want any Roomba care tips or references, let me know. I have lots :>D

No, women do a better job than the cleaning robots. The reason I say this is because my s/o is not lazy. She had a Roomba vacuum cleaner until I returned it back to the home improvement store that she had been using a few months back. Although I’ll have to say It works well, she used to use it on ceramic floors.

It picks up small debris of dirt, trash but it does not vacuum smashed in food drops in the kitchen and dining room floors when kids make a mess. The thing she hated was cleaning the robotic vacuum cleaner after each use and recharging the battery like recharging a cellphone. Even crisw said the batteries need special care. Now she prefers the old fashion way when it comes to cleaning floors.

“it does not vacuum smashed in food drops in the kitchen and dining room floors when kids make a mess.”

That’s what the Scooba is for.

@skillcapes7

Oh, also- “women do a better job than the cleaning robots.”

Really? What about men? :>D

Tamara's avatar

@crisw, Thanks for sharing! 8 Roombas and 5 that work? Lolz, I can imagen the maintenance they require. :( But hey, I wouldn’t mind having a Roomba, give me one, I’ll be glad to tell you were to ship-it lol, J/K. :)

skillcapes7's avatar

@crisw, yeah but the Scooba price value is absurd, and that robot still requires maintenance after use. Old fashion hand scrubbing does not. Men also do cleaning, but the reason I said women do a better job than the robots is because their are more stay at home mom’s outhere to do the in-home cleaning chores.

crisw's avatar

@Tamara

Check your local Craigslist. You can often pick them up for very cheap.

crisw's avatar

@skillcapes7

It takes me about three minutes to clean my Scooba and only a little more for the Roombas.

“Old fashion hand scrubbing” takes much longer!

As for “more stay at home mom’s”- well, I – and most other women- am not that! Thank goodness I can set my Roomba army loose before I go to bed and wake up to a clean floor :>)

skillcapes7's avatar

@Tamara, you can pick them up cheap alright, as in “used” with “defects” at a half price were you made the “lolz” yourself in regards to crisw, lol

skillcapes7's avatar

@crisw, it might take you about 3 minutes to clean your Scooba while it would take me 2 minutes to scrub a pile of mess with “microfiber towels” that do wonders for less than $10.00 dollars a pack. I’m not referring either to a whole kitchen or dining room floor but (read closely), a pile of mess itself.

“As for “more stay at home mom’s”- well, I and many other women are not that!” And there are still many more other women that are stay at home mom’s. By the way, that so called Roomba army might clean a floor at an expense roughly around a $1000.00 to $1500.00 dollars of not 1, but 5 of them as you said it yourself: “an army” when a good mop would cost less than $20.00 dollars to begin with:

http://www.simplygoodstuff.com/microfiber_mops.htm?gclid=CLer2Kjf6qQCFVkJ2god_kg1zA

I can’t forget about those 3 other robots that don’t work lol, that’s another estimate of around $400.00 to $600.00 dollars of robotic scrap lol, who knows if they’re recyclable or not, lol

PS: I believe you forgot to read my whole answer: “The reason I say this is because my s/o is not lazy.”

@skillcapes7

I paid a grand total of about $150 for my eight Roombas. And I only have eight because I enjoy them- I don’t need eight to clean the house, two do just fine.

And wake up to the modern age- at least 71% of mothers work outside the home. And a lot of us women don’t have kids at all. Lighten up.

skillcapes7's avatar

@crisw, Uhh… in this time of economical crisis, I would imagen there are 71% of working mothers.
We still cannot forget about the stay at home mom’s. $150.00 dollars? Yup, the price explains it all lol. How are you going to enjoy 3 broken Roombas? after what you said, ”(five that work right now)”
Lolz, 2 used robotic stooges just waiting to break down, lol

I’m in the modern age, but the Roombas are still worthless. I know this as an experience because I purchased the Roomba for my s/o and was not worth the price value of what I paid for it, close to $400.00 dollars with the taxes. “Lighten up” I am, that is why I’m providing “lolz” throughout my replies. :-)

@skillcapes7@crisw,

Thanks for sharing once again! More points to the both of you for being very detailed when it comes to cleaning products.

[mod says] Let’s stick to answering the question, please.

@skillcapes7, you obviously must not live in the US, where 49.83% of all jobs are held by women. I would say that’s pretty close to 50%. This takes into account women past childbearing age who are still in the workforce. Of women with young children, 48% stay home with them.

crisw's avatar

@Tamara

Back to the subject at hand :>)

My advice to you would be to do some reading here and learn what you can. Then, try a used Roomba in good shape. I’d look for a Discovery series with a caster wheel rather than a fixed wheel; they are easier to maintain and you can probably pick one up for $20–40. That way, you aren’t out of pocket much if you don’t like it. Do read the links on the site above on how to maintain your Roomba.

skillcapes7's avatar

@BarnacleBill, Uhh,,, I am living in the US, were closely to 50% of women in the work industry are working, thanks to the link you provided. Hence this whole crisis of the Millenium lol, but that’s not the point in this topic. The bottom line is that people do not have to pay an absurd price for a Roomba or have to purchase a used one without the warranty to return back as I did mine. All it takes to clean a floor are some simple micro fiber towels along with a micro fiber mop with a budget less than $35.00 dollars for both cleaning products Period

And don’t even claim that there is hardly any time for working women to have clean floors by doing in-home cleaning chores the old fashioned way. For example, the time it takes you to answer about 7 to 10 questions in this site; you could have already had some clean floors. Working women in the other hand: the time it takes in a household from a telephone, cellphone conversation — home floors could of have been finished in an instant. You get the picture? I’m sure you do, pointless discussion.

Tamara's avatar

@skillcapes7@crisw, I think everyone here should just stick to answering this question like augustlan posted in his answer. I’m not against neither of your answers, comments. There are critics everywhere in all kinds of different subjects. In this case, we all have a way of doing household chores whether it’s about cleaning the modern way or old fashion way. The importance is what works best for us.

crisw's avatar

@Tamara

I thought I was…see my last answer; totally on topic!

@crisw, Everyone that provided a helpful answer to the question I had asked is totally on topic.
Again, “I’m not against neither of your answers, comments.” And again, thanks for sharing!
