Insurance question about shared car?

Asked by MrsBabu (1points) October 25th, 2010

My friend and I share my car, I am wondering does he need to be added to my insurance plan? Or should he get an individual plan without having a car? (Is this even possible?)
Thanks!

Your car, your auto insurance. most insurance companies now insure the driver, no matter which car he/she drives. no need to insure your friend. most policies already cover passengers in a said vehicle. read your policy.

@john65pennington Thanks! I know the passengers are covered but my friend sometimes drives the car without me in there, would he be covered then?

@MrsBabu WELCOME
Most car insurance coverage includes any authorized driver, family or friend. Does not include underage drivers if not on policy. NOT AN AGENT OR EXPERT.
Read your policy.

Welcome to Fluther. (And say hi to your husband for me, if you’re the Mrs. Babu often referred to by a gentleman—nominal gentleman—in Answerology.)

I would qualify the advice you’re getting to read your policy if you feel that you can understand it and find the information that you need, but otherwise, consult your insurance agent and advise them to show you where in the policy this question is answered to your satisfaction. If the vehicle has some kind of “shared ownership”, for example, then your insurance company may need to be informed of this (because it could change their ‘daily usage’ statistics, overnight storage data, etc. to give you a more or less favorable rate), and not all policies will insure all legal drivers; that’s not automatic.

But if you explain the circumstances to your agent and she can point you to the wording in the policy that covers you (and is comprehensible) then you’ll have an answer you can rely on.
