Have you had any extraterrestrial/ghost/cryptozoology encounters/sightings that you would be willing to share?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7991points) October 27th, 2010

I just got this book called Mysteries of the Unexplained and I was wondering if any Flutherites (is that the right word?) had any weird occurrences that would deal with cryptozoology (refers to the search for animals which are considered to be legendary or otherwise nonexistent by mainstream biology.)

I love stories like this.

Nope—I’ve never experienced any of the above. If I had, I’d be willing to share. I sometimes like reading about them as well, but take no stock in any of them being true until proof is shown.

@Pied_Pfeffer : So you would have to see it happen with your own two eyes, right? I don’t blame you. I like reading about them and hearing about them, but I’m not so sure if I believe in them, per se.

I think that for the most part UFOs are exactly that, “Unidentified Flying Objects”. That does not mean that they are extraterrestrial in origin. I believe that for the most part they are classified military aircraft and governments purposely keep the idea of extraterrestrials alive to provide a distraction.

P.S. For what it’s worth I believe it highly arrogant to believe that out of the gazillion planets out there ours is the only one with life on it.

I have had many experiences with a couple of the things you listed. Am I willing to share? I have tried a couple of times and was ridiculed because someone that has not had the same experience thinks they know better. So no I am not willing to share in an open forum.

@JustmeAman : Please please please could you maybe write them on my wall privately? Me love you long time.

I’d love to…

It was a warm Summer afternoon. I was outside walking down the street. In the sky was an airplane way off in the distance. Then this object started coming toward it. The airplane veered off in the opposite direction as it got closer. The object then went off behind a cloud and disappeared.

Don’t know what the object was and obviously the pilot saw it too.

That’s the closest encounter I’ve ever had.

@troubleinharlem I don’t need to see or experience the phenomenon. Having a group of qualified people that are able to assess that, for example, the Loch Ness Monster is real, then I’d be willing to believe it.

Here is an example: The Ivory Billed Woodpecker was thought to be extinct for decades. Now, there are reports of sightings. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has been conducting extensive research to discover if they still exist. There is proof that they once existed; there is speculation that they haven’t died out. Until a reputable source proves that they have indeed survived, I’m not buying into it. I’m pretty good at identifying woodpeckers in the US, but anyone who would take my word that I’ve seen one, even if in the midst of their known territory, would be a fool, including me.

I was on a vacation like two months back and I was visited by a ghost. I have a picture to prove it (I have to upload it later). Anyway, I was in a room by myself.. No one was there. I was taking pictures of myself (the dumb mirror pics lol) and I got a male persons body in the picture behind me. I double checked all if the photos to see if it was there again, and it wasn’t. I also looked behind me and there was nothing that could make it look like a guys body. Also, later that night the bathroom door opened. It was closed by one of those heavy metal locks and it opened on it’s on. It was opening and slamming shut by itself. I asked if whatever it was if it was here and it the door gently opened… It was weird.

@Pied_Pfeffer What if you did see it with your own eyes?

erichw1504's avatar

@ducky_dnl That’s awesome. Waiting patiently for the pic.

@JustmeAman It depends upon what it was. In most cases, I prefer proof. For example, I’ve seen birds in my backyard that shouldn’t be in this area. I’ll call Mom and describe it with my bird book in hand, and she’ll walk me through other options. She’s always proven my first instinct wrong.

I used to do work all over Florida, and once, while driving on Alligator Alley, was sure I finally saw my first alligator. I pulled the car over and went to investigate with camera in hand. It turned out to be a large piece of wood floating in the water.

Once, I woke up and noticed a pale hand draped on my hip as I was on my side. I wanted to pick it up, but couldn’t make an effort to do so. I later learned about sleep paralysis and how common it is. It described exactly what I had experienced. That was good enough for me.

@all Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t disbelieve the stories that are told; I want proof in order to believe it myself.

@ducky_dnl I want to see the photo as well.

I would agree with you there. No one should just believe anything they are told. They should find out for themselves and that I totally agree on.

@JustmeAman Thank you. I still miss Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny though.

Your timing with this is appropriate, considering scientists are now saying that chupacabras are just coyotes with mange. (Here, here.)

I am skeptical of this stuff generally, and my own story is not cryptozoological per se, but once I was riding through my neighborhood on my bicycle and a large unidentifiable white dog appeared ‘out of nowhere’ to my immediate right, ran some distance beside me along the road, and then disappeared back into the nowhere it had come from as I watched it.

Subtly strange, nothing major. It looked like a husky, but bigger. Although today I’m sure it just disappeared into a bush or something, the event was like totally mystical to me as a kid.

I have had plenty encounters but I think most were just psychological or caused by paranoia. Like one time I started seeing things that weren’t there and minutes later they reappeared as something real. I started hearing and even feeling things. It felt like something jumped on my bed while I was sleeping but nothing was there. Another night I looked at the wall and there appeared to be blood and it was slowly writing something. I was constantly hearing my mom call me but I would go see what she wanted and she would tell me I’m hearing things. It was all very creepy but I’ll never know if it was a spirit or I was going insane.

I’ve been to Loch Ness a few times and I always check the water for monsters but so far I have seen nothing.

troubleinharlem's avatar

@ducky_dnl : I HAVE TO SEE THIS.

KatawaGrey's avatar

I had a “small” encounter once. Personally, I don’t think seeing any ghost is a small thing but but I’ve heard much more impressive stories. While I was walking my dog one night, I looked towards my garage and saw a figure floating a foot or two off the ground. I ran back inside my house and have been too scared to walk in front of the garage at night since.

Some of my friends have both awesome and terrifying stories.

troubleinharlem's avatar

@KatawaGrey : Do they have fluthers? Thats pretty creepy. o_o

KatawaGrey's avatar

@troubleinharlem: Unfortunately, they do not. One friend just moved out of a house haunted by an active and somewhat malicious ghost. More than once, she felt her dog come up onto her bed and settle down across her legs. She would put out her hand to pet the dog and nothing would be there. One time, she had a whole conversation with her sister and then it turned out the sister hadn’t been in the house that night. I never slept over.

Another friend’s life was saved by the ghost in her house. She tripped going up the stairs and felt something guide her hand to the railing. She was alone in the house at the time.

Unexplained does not mean inexplicable. Ghosts are often the result of bad plumbing.

JustmeAman's avatar

And Ghosts are often the help and or movement of spirits.

Spirits = Booze

Or

Spirits = Psychotic inner voices

Come on people. What do Spirits =?
