Are there any legit jobs for mothers out there where you can work from home and make decent money doing it?

Asked by amberrae (462points) October 31st, 2010

I am looking for some type of income that can be made at home, via the internet or anything else. I would love to be able to still be at home most of the time so I can properly raise my four year old son.

Well my single mom payed the rent watching a few other kids while she watched her own all day!

People are willing to pay quite a few dollars for this service.

She came up with a few learning activities, had a nap time, and a lunch time, and a snack time, and all were happy :)

Child Care or author (as in J K Rowing).

You could try freelance work online if you have any skills you could put to work, that would be my main advice.

Otherwise, avoid:

- Plans that ask you to pay to start.
– Clicking ads for money
– Reading emails
– Playing poker or mmorpg’s to sell the fake money for real money

or anything that looks strange. Or maybe you can set up an ebay account, and start selling little objects you have made. or maybe your own site, if you have some kind of manufacturing skills you could market.

if you dont want to work online at all, then there are quite few options left. you could maybe turn your living room in to an assembly line, where you put little things together for so many cents each one.

If you want to consider the child care route, check with your state rules first. Some states have rules that once you watch more than x amount of kids for x amount of hours a week you have to apply for a license to be a daycare center. If you don’t, you could be fined, so definitely check the rules before you do it.

If you were willing to get training as a medical transcriptionist, you might be able to find a job working at home and doing that.

There are plenty of jobs where people work from home and can earn a decent paycheck. It just depends on your skills, your desires, the work schedule flexibility (if you have to step away to take care of your child/ren and what your needs are.

For example, a co-worker quit her office job that paid well and offered insurance benefits to launch her crafts business and work from home. Her husband’s company covers the family on the insurance aspect. She’s quite talented and markets her wares through family, friends, and Facebook, as well as an independent site. Her hours are obviously flexible and allow her to attend to their two daughters. If she didn’t have her husband’s financial support, she wouldn’t have been able to do it.

Dad started his own sales company and ‘hired’ Mom to run the business. She took accounting and computer classes, and handled everything from our basement’s office. It two years before the commissions finally started rolling in, but it paid off in the long run.

West Corporation has legitimate work at home jobs answering incoming sales or customer service calls.

You can also try WWW.ETSY.COM if you are creative!

I recently read of a woman who makes$1,500 a month selling her designer decorations, but there was no mention of how or where she finds customers.

I’ve worked from home twice in my life. The first time was when I first became a mother. I had a full-time office job, and I was able to convince my employer to take a chance on letting me work from home. I went into the office a couple of days a week, for a few hours at a time, and did the rest of my job whenever my infant was sleeping. When my second child was born, I became a full-time stay-at-home mom.

Fast forward many, many years: Now, I’m the Community Manager for Fluther. The office is located in San Fransisco, CA but I work from my home across the country! I started out as a volunteer moderator, and over time it has become my full-time job. (Which is awesome.)

Long story short… there are jobs out there, but they are not a dime a dozen. I’ve been incredibly lucky.
