(NSFW/Gross) Why do tea and coffee effect me in different ways, digestively?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19059points) November 3rd, 2010

When I drink tea (real tea, black), I have to pee right away. It goes straight through me; often I have to pee even before I’m done with my tea. Coffee, however, takes about half an hour after I’m finished consuming it to make me pee. It also does some things with my bowels, but that’s a different issue.
So, coffee has more caffeine than tea. From a brewing standpoint, they are the same. So why does tea make me go right away, but coffee has a half-hour delay?

They’re made of completely different things, it’s not surprising that your body would react differently.

Tea seems to have a faster-acting diuretic influence. I have noticed the same thing.

In addition to caffeine, it contains thiazide diuretics.

Tea makes me pee too! I don’t drink coffee so wouldn’t know about the side effects with that.

In addition to all the above, coffee is acidic and can affect your digestive system…interestingly.

@Trillian You mean like giving you a stomach ache and giving you diarrhea?

Gross? Yes. NSFW? No.

Anyway, I don’t think it’s you, it has the same effect on me, and so I would imagine if you and me than many others as well…

@mrrich724 There isn’t actually a gross heading like there is a NSFW heading. So I know it’s not actually NSFW, but sometimes I read the questions and right there in the title is some gross-out and I’m like “Hey, I’m eating dinner!” I can often help with those questions, it just requires a certain mindset.

Ah, LOL. Good point :)

@papayalily in a word. I guess that’s why people add creamer, kind of like buffer. Consider; coffee is made from the bean and tea is brewed from the leaf…
Different plants, I know, but.
