You discover you can read minds and influence thought, do you use the ability?

We know this is hypothetical, but try to imagine it. You are out hiking way from the city and a meteor shower starts, and you stop to watch. Then before you know it a baseball size meteor land near you and spews its dust all over you before you could dodge out of the way. All seems normal, you were not hurt just a little dusty. Then you notice 5 days before a full Moon, the day of the full Moon, and 5 days after that at sunset you have the ability to read people’s minds, you know what they are thinking, and furthermore you can influence their thought. If you thought “Man I wish this guy would go back and do some more shopping I am in a hurry and don’t want to wait in line” the guy would actually do it! Or “I wish she/he would give me her/his number”, and they do it. It is the strongest at sunset and diminishes steadily over the next 2 hours after sunset, but only near the full Moon. Would you use an ability like that, and if so how? Would you do all you could not to use it. Would you trust telling anyone that you had it even giving them a demonstration to prove it? If you told anyone do you believe they would avoid you around time of a full Moon?

Yes…in a heart beat. I would walk right over and “wish” my next door neighbor set his own house on fire then hop in my car and pay a visit to my MIL next. I would be very busy that first full moon.

Absolutely, I’m with @cruiser on this one! Can’t guarantee I wouldn’t abuse my new found ability though :-)

With some people, not everyone. I would not want to know what everyone is thinking. But I would influence people who could help me out of tough situations. And to get what I want, but I don’t think I would manipulate people so much.

I would never, ever do such a manipulative thing.

Do the influenced thoughts remain as your power fades, or do they fade with it.

My answer would be different in both circumstances.

If the answer is “yes”, then my answer is “absolutely”.

If the answer is no, my answer is “absolutely, but only to do things that won’t get me in trouble later when people wake up”.

Hypothetical, hell. I do have both of those abilities from time to time. But it takes a lot of effort to do either, and usually when I can do one I can’t do the other (with the same person). It’s not like flipping a switch.

Yes! I’d be busy divying up the spoils.

You mean I wake up one morning as Karl Rove?

I wouldn’t try to read people’s minds. I might be disturbed by what I find there. But I would use the power of influence. It could be fun, like having a vampire’s glamour. I would use it to advance myself and get out of difficult situations (but I wouldn’t hurt anyone).

@OreetCocker Can’t guarantee I wouldn’t abuse my new found ability though :-) At least you are honest, how would you abuse it? Fix some bets, cheat at poker, get the Brinks truck guard to “lose” a satchel of cash?

@the100thmonkey Do the influenced thoughts remain as your power fades, or do they fade with it. Interesting point. I would think once the thought is in there it would be seen as the person’s own thought so even if the power that spawned the thought faded the thought may remain because the person would accept it as their own, so it might be hit and miss.

@Hypocrisy_Central. Hey did you use it right then to read my mind? That’s exactly what I’d do, and some!!! :-)
I would use it to do good too though!
