Can somebody help me solve this cipher?

Asked by pplufthesun (617points) November 7th, 2010

I made a post yesterday about http://www.28cheeseburgers.wordpress.com asking what it was. For the most part people didn’t know, however, I am now fairly sure it is an alternate reality game. I was following it, and today, a cipher was posted with the clue “you are what you steal” Can anybody solve the cipher?

I’m really puzzled, and don’t see the purpose in translating white noise into anything meaningful. There is nothing there. It’s just static. In the bottom example I began to see a skeleton face in the pixels, but that’s only because my mind took me there, and not because of any hidden image.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies I think the “you are what you steal” line has something to do with it.

That riddle only makes sense to me if it is in line with my previous point. I can “steal” a thousand words out of that random script and “make” the letters say anything I wish. I don’t think there’s anything there except for building blocks. How I arrange them is up to me.

I’m a little confused over how in the world you found this. Are you playing an alternate reality game, because if you are it would be a lot easier to understand if you’d just come right out and say it. Otherwise, I’m forced to conclude that you’re part of the CIA or something and should have access to WAY more advanced cryptographers than you could probably find on Fluther…

Anyway, the thing to do in deciphering this text is to first try a basic text analysis. Assume, for now, that what you’ve got is a simple substitution cipher. The most common letter in the English language is “e”, so start there and try to make sense of everything one letter at a time (also look for one, two, and three letter words, especially ones that are capitalized, like “I”). You could also try the Caesar cipher approach in reverse once you’ve identified a few potential substitutions. Another basic cipher that you could try in reverse is the Vigenère cipher. Good luck!

Edit: This picture is incomplete in providing useful data about the cipher. See: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=751675

(Spoiler: There’s more spoof surrounding this than is reasonable.)

Also, please do not confuse riddle with cypher. They are very different.

Its just a version of pig Latin most of it is garbage… just change the words to what a normal person would say… Like “will (persons name) of any late…ect and change the cypher for each sentence.. I won’t waste my life trying to solve it
