Is there any way to see info on the files on a site (even those not linked to) before opening the site?

Asked by Zyx (4170points) November 8th, 2010

I’m constantly browsing stuff I probably shouldn’t be and what I’m basically asking is some way to subvert being led directly to the index. Is such a thing even possible?

This question isn’t clear to me what it’s asking…what exactly do you mean by index? You can always try googling the URL to see what the link really leads to (so you can avoid getting rick-rolled for instance).

Do you mean how can you prevent it’s a bad site before opening it ? you can just Google it and through its description you will get to know what type of content there is in it…

There is a setting to allow directory browsing on a web server. It is usually turned off, so the following usually does not work, but FWIW…

If you are looking at a website and do not ask for a particular file, you are sometimes shown the contents of the directory on the web server.

Imaginary example:

This shows a single web page “homepage.html”
www.somewebsite.com/public/homepage.html

This shows the list of files in the directory “public”
www.somewebsite.com/public/

@jaytkay lol 404

but I guess this confirms there’s no way to work this on the user end.
