Why is Facebook so awesome?

Asked by Berserker (33548points) November 13th, 2010

I’m all for keeping in contact with family, old friends or even meeting new people…but it doesn’t seem to me that Facebook is really about that more than it is about drama, stupid online games, controversy in the media and whatever the equivalent of street cred might be for the online world. Folks never did need the internet before in order to keep in touch with people. I had a pen pall when I was in grade three. That was awesome. What am I missing? Am I not adapting to modern times, even though I wasn’t alive when kings started wars with the help of carrier pigeons and hawks?

For me it’s great because my friends and family that are far away can see what’s going on in my life via pictures very quickly. I upload them once to Facebook and they can all see them, instead of me having to print multiple copies and mail them or set multiple e-mails to get them to everyone. I still mail pictures for some things, but Facebook always people to see more of what’s going on and more of what they would see if I lived near them.

To quote my grandfather: Facebook is the world’s longest, continuous autobiography.

I like to show off my artwork, photographs, and shit I think is interesting on facebook. I also keep in touch with a bunch of my friends on it. I don’t play Farmville or Mafia Quest or any of that stupid bullshit, and I don’t post pictures of my cock and wonder why I got fired from my job. I just see it as a website that is fun to use and I don’t obsess over it like some people do. Honestly, you probably aren’t missing much. though I’d totally add you as a friend if you had one, Symbeline.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard Technically I do have one, but I ’‘closed’’ it like a year and a half ago. Love your answer though, and @Seaofclouds too.

Several years ago I joined Multiply because my grandson asked me to. It was said to be all the things that I have read about Facebook, but nothing ever came of it. I haven’t even bothered with Facebook.

I rolled my own.

Fuck facebook for selling my info. I will sell my own.

I sincerely and exclusively to keep up with people people I don’t see often or at all. I use facebook for that because it has most people on it. It’s also handy for keeping up on random lost friend’s exploits… ex: recently, an old friend I had in San Francisco is going to be rapping on stage. I wouldn’t have known that otherwise and have no reason to keep up with her.

Over-rated, a waste of time, and a risk to your privacy.

Its simple… it is THE easiest way to find and re-establish a relationship with any long lost friend or family member, sometimes they even find you.

T’isn’t

I think it’s handy because I can keep up with friends and relatives without being on the phone 24/7. But I don’t think it’s awesome. Mostly because of the games. There isn’t a lot of drama with my friends or family so I don’t get any of that.

If someone made another website that did practically the same thing but was more focused on the people rather than the games then I’d switch in a heartbeat.

Which would probably be useless since nobody else would… But that’s where I stand.

It’s taken the Christmas newletter into the daily space.

Probably not awesome and for the reasons you originally listed in your question details (drama, stupid online games, controversy in the media and whatever the equivalent of street cred might be for the online world) but it certainly is convenient and sometimes comical (or shocking maybe) in how much personal information people are willing to share with millions of others.

Like other Jellies have stated above, it is a nice tool to find and reconnect with old friends, family members, and schoolmates, for instance. In the past couple of years, I’ve got in touch with friends I went to Army basic training with 24 years ago and long lost acquaintances from high school I hadn’t talked to in 25 years. It was a very pleasant and welcome surprise.

I agree with @janbb. It isn’t.

Because every last pervert on the planet apparently thinks that my old account that I can’t deactivate for some odd reason is that of some lonely vulnerable guy that they can get their hands on and…(shudders)

I’m also in the group saying facebook isn’t awesome. It’s just handy.

It’s a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. With the pictures wallpost, status updates, and IMs I think its a great thing indeed.

As to date, I have still refrained. I’m cyber-socially unacceptable. :)
