Attention gamers: I want a game like Descent, or X-Wing Alliance.

Asked by mowens (8403points) November 14th, 2010

Are space sims dead? I want a new game, where we can have massive dog fights. I hear allegiance was like this… but that is old as well! What the hell? What game can I play to have a massive space battle? I want to have to help a teammate getting shot. I want to have a dog fight! I want a ship!!! Why is everything a FPS?

Why does it matter how “old” the game is? ...As long as you enjoy it, play it. I’d recommend the original Starcraft BroodWars or the new Starcraft2 Wings of Liberty. Good Luck~

Those are Real Time Strategy games though…. I have and love those. The problem with the older games is that it is increasingly harder to find people to play with. haha

I hear ya’. After playing today’s photorealistic games, going back to Descent where everything is made out of simple polygons and colors, the old games just don’t satisfy any more.

There must be space games out there. There’s Star Trek Online, but you have to play a monthly subscription fee to play it. I haven’t played it. But from what I hear, there’s aspects of an RPG, but there’s also plenty of battles in space as well.

Or subscribe to a gaming magazine or two, and stay on top of what’s available and what’s coming. They often have articles listing obscure games in different genres that don’t get a lot of press and you’d have never heard about otherwise.

Freelancer is well worth a look. It’s a little bit space operaish but the story is interesting and the space combat is fun.

Is freelancer multiplayer?

Yes up to 128 people at the same time.

You could always try EVE online.

starcraft is a good game, though you’re too late to hop onto the pro scene, it’s still fun.

freelance online is fun, if you find a good community to play on.

EVE online is pay to play, and i hear its a lot of grinding. though, i hear it’s pretty sweet.

Starcraft is a RTS though, I want a space simulator. I will look into Freelancer. I didnt much care for eve, I played it when it first came out in 2003.

How about Freespace 2? You can pick it up from GOG for $10.
