What should I do about SMS spam?

I just started receiving these spammy text messages a few days ago, and they’re very annoying.

The messages say I can message STOP to stop receiving them (though they’re all from different numbers), but I’m hesitant to respond at all.

Depending on what kind of phone you are using, you might be able to get an app to block spam.

I’ve often replied with STOP and found that to be effective. If they don’t stop, you can file a complaint with the FCC at: http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm.

Wikipedia has a good article on mobile phone spam (take a look at the “Countermeasures” section). Apparently, the GSM Association has announced a pilot program that will allow you to report SMS spam by forwarding messages to short code 7726 (“SPAM”).

You should be able to block individual numbers. I have Alltel and enter (leter) B (space) number to block – send to 8888. I had a problem with spam texts after entering my phone into facebook for confirmation, which really pissed me off.

I had to block a few numbers but then the spam stopped.
