How can I re-use a memory stick?

Asked by Pharmacy_flunky410 (23points) November 16th, 2010

I received a usb memory stick at a conference. It is loaded with
advertising propaganda regarding the benefits of fibre in the diet. Can I get rid of this information and re-use the stick for something useful to me?

I don’t see why not. It should be as simple as deleting all the files and putting new files on it. Plug it in, select all the files, delete them, and drag and drop the new files.

However, If it was given to you free as part of a propaganda thing, there is a very good chance that it is just a silly little free one without much storage. You will be lucky if it can hold any more than 500mb. There is little to no chance that it will be a good 8gig one.

If you want memory sticks, there is a little trick you can use, but you need to be smart about it.

Google “custom flash drives”. You will find 1000’s of sites that offer custom made memory sticks. What you do, is you go in to one of these sites and register, and then you look for a stick that you like the look of. Once you have found a memory stick you like the look of, you click purchase, and you load up your shopping cart with 10.000 memory sticks. But, at the last moment, back out from buying it and just leave the site.

If all goes to plan, you will get an email the next day saying “complete your order now and save 10%!” or something along those lines, they usually include a bonus code. Once this happens, you need to respond to the email, or email them from their site. and tell them you are interested in 10.000 units, but that even with the 10% or 20% discount, that there is another site that is offering a similar drive for less money. You then ask them if they can offer a better price. If they can or can’t offer a better price is irrelevant, all you are tring to do is make it look like you are interested.

Once they are convinced that you are interested in buying 10.000, ask them if they can send you 1 free 8gig unit as a sample. Most of the time they will be happy to send you one for free. Specially if they think it will lead to a sale of 10.000 units.

Yes. That’s the point of them giving you it.
