Do you get up to pee or wait for the morning?

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) November 18th, 2010

It’s 2:00 AM. You’ve been in bed wasting time on the internet for a couple hours. You’re about to turn your light out when you realize you need to pee. Your bed’s nice and warm and cozy. Do you get up and pee, or just ignore it and go to sleep?

I like to hold it, because it’ll help me get out of bed in the morning if I really have to go. Alternatively, it might become a pressing issue before it’s time to get up, and no one likes getting out of bed in the middle of the night.

What’s the Fluther consensus on this issue?

I get up and go. I’ll have to get up and go again in a few hours anyway. The joys of pregnancy and a baby pressing on your bladder.

It’s very hard to ignore it if you really need to pee

I too have to make the effort as comfort is everything for me being able to sleep.

DominicX's avatar

Yeah, I find that I can’t ignore it. If I have to go to the bathroom at night, I go, otherwise it’ll just be bothering me until I do.

I go sometimes. But of course I run to and back from the bathroom. Wouldn’t want the monsters to get me.

This is actually one of the odd compulsions I developed as part of my night routine when I was a child. If I felt even the slightest need to pee, I sought the washroom immediately. Ignoring it was out of the question: I simply would not have fallen asleep. Sometimes I would get up four or five times. It was absolutely ridiculous.

Even if I’m warm and cozy in bed, I’ll abandon my cocoon of blankets for relief.

At 2am I’d get up and go. At my age I wouldn’t be able to last another 5 hours. I’d end up waking up again at 4am which is even worse.

It depends on what I’m drinking but usually I hold it. I usually need help getting out of bed in the mornings, so I basically do that to assist me.

YARNLADY's avatar

I haven’t much choice, if I don’t get up, the next sneeze will cause me to wet my bed.

Depends on how cold it is. If I’m warm in my bed and getting out will cause me to shiver I’ll probably just forget after a few seconds but otherwise I’ll try to go. Not just to be more comfortable but also because it’s a lot healthier.

mrentropy's avatar

I get up and go because I don’t want my nice warm dry bed to turn into a warm wet bed.

Like @Zyx-Depends on how cold it is in the room.

I always have to pee before I go to sleep. Even if I’m having a nap in the afternoon, I pee before I lie down. I usually have a hard time falling asleep, and I don’t need any extra distractions keeping me awake.

I don’t even open my eyes for my 3a.m. pee call.
I fumble my way down the hall,
to find and sit on the cold toilet seat,
because off at 11p.m went the heat.
I hurry up and pee my pee,
So that I’m back in bed by three 0 three.
My humble attempt at poetry. :D

I usually make sure I pee before I switch off the light and I often need to get up to pee a few hours after I go to bed as well (usually around 3am ish). If I need to go I don’t wait, I like to be comfortable.

I usually wake up at 2 in the a.m. with a cat sitting on my hip. He then gets three inches from my face looking down at me and puurrrrrrs. I turn my body to gently flick him off, then he gets up and runs for the bedroom door. He wants outside. I get up, let him out and on my way back to my bed, I stop in the john and do the deed. I can’t hold it.

Because of my health problems I need to get up at least four times a night. I usually stop drinking at around four pm or so, but still have to get up! Sometimes I can turn over and it will go away, but not always.

casheroo's avatar

If I have to go, then I get up. I hate doing it, since it risks waking up the kids (especially the baby).

I gotta go when nature calls, I prefer I nice warm dry bed as opposed to the alternative, warm wet one! :-/
I had enough of that as a kid :-(

faye's avatar

Not only do I get up but I sit waiting for the second pee! I drink a lot of water and always need to pee.

sakura's avatar

Get up and go!! I like snuggling back ito bed and getting warm again!

sleepdoc's avatar

For me it depends on what time it is and how bad I have to go. If it is close to time to get up it nearly needs to be busting my bladder. If I just went to sleep an hour ago probably get up and do it so I don’t have to keep waking up.

@AmWiser Nice description. I’m lucky because my bathroom is just past the end of my bed, but today I have a huge bruise where I stumbled over the dog and hit the edge of the dresser.

Berserker's avatar

I always go, I can’t get to sleep with the feeling of having to pee, whatsoever.

buster's avatar

Depends how many beers I drank before I passed out.

HungryGuy's avatar

[NSFW] It depends on the circumstances. Sometimes I get up to pee. Other times, I’ll just tell my slave girl to crawl under the covers on her back. tilt her head back, and open her mouth.
