Best way to get paid irregular, but large amounts of money online?

Asked by saservp (291points) November 19th, 2010

I’m not sure if I worded that question very well.

I am a contractor and get work some months, and none others. The average income per job is between 500 and 3,500 dollars.

I need to collect payment from people who usually don’t live nearby. I allow people to send checks but many people don’t like doing this, so I accept paypal as well. Problem is, if you’re accepting this much via paypal it can eat as much as $100 out of your fee.

Is there something better to accept this price point of payments, or is that pretty much the best I can do?

If you have a USBank checking account, Intuit Quicken has a very low rate online credit card processor that works great. I canceled my regular hard terminal and went with the Quicken solution. No monthly fee, no terminal charge, and half the interest from the old guys. I’m happy with it.

Hrm, sounds nice, but the website shows its 13/mo, plus 30 cents per transaction, plus 2.9% per non-swiped transaction, so still the same as paypal unfortunately :(
