What are three "invented needs" you cannot live without?

Asked by jazzjeppe (2598points) November 21st, 2010

With invented needs I mean things and gadgets that manufacturers sell to us as if they are things we really need and couldn’t live without. Such as cell phones (I mean, we did fine without them 15 years ago, didn’t we?), laptops (what happened with pen and paper?) and so on.

So, I guess I’ll start then :)

Three things I can’t live without that I should be able to do fine without:

1) My cell phone (arrrrgh!)
2) My desktop PC (bleh!)
3) The Internet

1) My car. I like being able to drive to go visit friends and family when I want to.
2) My cell phone. I have it with me 24/7 and it’s the main mode of contact I have with my husband right now.
3) My laptop. It’s my secondary means of communication with my husband right now.

Nothing much. I mean, I would really miss a lot of things if they suddenly became unavailable, but I could adjust. Things I feel like I would still sort of need are

Books
Phone or internet (some form of instant communication)
Tylenol

Already shorn, spun and dyed wool, so many colors of thread that I can’t even count them all, readily available fabrics to create gifts and clothing.

I have experimented with spinning wool (not shearing it though) and dying it with natural dyes, but it’s way more trouble than it’s worth. I wouldn’t even begin to know how to spin cotton into thread.

Actually…..I had to have medical intervention when I was 6 months old. Had a hip bone that didn’t grow. They had to put me in a pillow splint for 6 months. Then, in 3rd grade, my eyes started going bad. I was getting a new script ever 6 months. By the time I hit Sr. High there were some concerns of me going blind altogether….but then I got contacts and that stopped the astigmatism. Then my teeth were really awful crooked, and I got braces. Without those “invented things” my life would be very, very different. I’d be a blind cripple with horrible teeth. I’m sure I would have been treated as retarded….might not even be alive now.

before “i“t was invented “it” wasn’t. so i suppose minus food, water, and other people i could get by fine. i am slightly addicted to my computer. although if we were talking life or death; obviously I’d be OK without allot of things. i suppose i would have to get inventive.and so it begins…....
