Help with my father's non-functioning iPod Classic?

My dad has a 160GB iPod Classic that he got about two years ago, new. It stopped functioning about a year ago and he just brushed it off. He told me if I can fix it, I can have it.
I can hear the hard drive humming and the battery works fine, but when I plug it into iTunes it says the iPod is in recovery mode and requests to restore it. It’s the only option so I do. It works for awhile, asks me for my password, but I always get a message that error 1430 has occurred. I looked into that, but I couldn’t quite get a handle on how to get it back to normal.
Has anyone experienced this before and know how to fix the iPod?
