Are home burglar alarms worth the cost?

Asked by LostInParadise (31914points) November 26th, 2010

What is it that burglars take? Suppose that you have under $100 worth of cash in the house and little in the way of jewelry and no expensive paintings or other art work. You have a $1000 computer, a $500 television and $2000 worth of stereo equipment. Is this stuff worth getting a burglar alarm for? Doesn’t home insurance cover theft?

I think the idea is that the siren will make the burglar run away without taking anything. Also, I know that at least some companies have the alarm system connected to the smoke alarms and will notify the fire department if there is a fire (helpful if the fire starts when no one’s around). I haven’t looked into this, but having an alarm might reduce the price of home insurance. If the cost of the alarm system is less than the difference in home insurance prices, it would be worth while.

I have a German Shepherd Dog that IMO,is better than any alarm system. ;)

It’s not so much the value of the things you have, you just don’t want to feel violated. My home was broken into once and it was not about what they took as much as it was about someone going through my personal belongings. I feel somewhat safer with an alarm system now, but I also realize if a thief really wanted to get in they would find a way.
Oh! and what @bobbinhood said about the insurance:-)

I’ve read in several places over the years that many burglars won’t even attempt to enter a home with an alarm system. Some say that just having signage is enough.

And, for me, it wouldn’t be the monetary value of the things I have. There’s the feeling of violation that @AmWiser mentioned, but there’s also the sentimental value to consider. I have a lot of items that belonged to my grandparents, and although they’re not worth much, I’d be devastated to lose them. Also, I have a number of signed and personalized books, which may not be replaceable. You can’t put a dollar value on sentimentality.

I think burglar alarm always worth the cost and I suggest to use it if you feel that the things you possess are worthy enough.
