My cat is in her pet carrier and is eating the newspaper, is that okay?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7991points) November 28th, 2010 from iPhone

I can’t get to the food right now, and I’m worried that she’ll get sick or something…

Is she locked in the carrier??

@Scooby : as opposed to being let out of it during the trip? Yes, she’s locked in. She’s quieted down now, though.

I think the worst that’ll happen is she’ll puke the paper up… is it a long trip? Will she be eating any time soon & more importantly for you, is she able to go to the toilet? :-/

@Scooby: it’s about 1½ hours, and I made sure that she didn’t eat at least 3 hours before we left.

The ink is not great for kitty, but it will be fine.

I wouldn’t worry too much about her eating the paper, 1½ hours isn’t so bad for her to be locked in her carrier either, so long as she can see you she shouldn’t fret too much…… I recommend plenty of chicken at the end of the trip, just to see if her appetite comes back ;-) I put a piece of old carpet in my cats carrier btw, gives them someting to hang on to….

Cats rarely get carsick, you can let her eat unless you had previous experiences in that regard.

@Scooby: I’ll give her tuna for a special treat. (:
@Thammuz: no, but once she went to the bathroom in her cage… that wasn’t so fun.

@troubleinharlem get used to it as she gets older, our cat is 15 and we have to close her in the toliet before leaving otherwise she always does that.

@Thammuz, @Scooby, @psychocandy – she’s okay now that she’s home! That’s her pic up there. ^^

The ink isn’t good for cats to ingest, but newspaper is commonly used to line cages and carriers. Maybe in the future you could use an old towel or blanket instead. Cute kitty. :)

Newspaper is the worst thing to line a cage with. It is coated with chemicals and ink. If you use only straw, towels, or shredded bark, your cat will be much safer.

Thanks for the pic, she’s a lovely looking thing , reminds me of the little naughty tortie I had a few years back….. They soon bounce back, I’m glad the trip went without a toilet incident this time :-/
