Do stink bugs even appear in the winter?

Asked by ladyv900 (713points) November 29th, 2010

Even when it’s snowing and do they die during that season? It’s like those annoying things multiply everyday like zombies. They’re so loud too. That’s the only answer I want, I already know how to kill them.

Yes, they do appear in the Winter. I think they dwell in cracks in your home. But I have noticed since having new windows put in this year, I haven’t seen any. What’s up with that?
How do you kill them? I had no luck with insect sprays:-)

Loud? I have them all over my house…. Like allll over. Cant say the species around me makes much noise. I have noticed though as its getting colder im seeing less and less. (thank god)

I came home one day and my door was black. I actually have a white door but there were that many stink bugs they actually just covered the door. It was fun getting inside that night….

I used some spider and ant raid and it worked pretty good on the stink bugs.

@uberbatman What the heck? What kind of insect repellent do you have because I spray those things close on contact with all kind of bug repellent and sprays and they keep moving and won’t die. They need to make one for stink bugs only because it is said that most stink bugs are effective by it.

@AmWiser Me either. It’s bad to squish them, even my mother said so because it said if you squish them and leave them,it’s going to give a real big horrid smell like something is burning too, but I still do it with a big hard shoe and I quickly get a vaccum cleaner sucking it up.Last time I squished one though it was so gross, you can hear it crack and might leave some squirted brown goo or brown blood. There’s also some remedies by simply just vaccuming them in without killing them and just dunk it out.

@ladyv900 unno its just a spider and ant spray thats supposed to be safe around water sources and plants. I could try and find the bottle later when ever I get around to going home again.

You could drop them into a bucket of soapy water. That should kill them and is safer than using pesticides. You also don’t get the crunching noise and brown goo like you do from squishing. :)

Where do you live? Do you get a good frost? If so, maybe a decent freeze will finally kill off this generation and they won’t come into the house. Do you know what kind of insect it is exactly? There are a lot of species of stink bugs. I only ask because knowing more specifics about the insect means you can predict its life cycle and make sure your home isn’t serving as a place for them to keep their life cycle going. For example, if something in your basement, attic, or walls is attracting them as a place to lay eggs and raise young, getting rid of whatever that is will get rid of the bugs.

If they’re just coming in to try to stay warm, you might just have to wait for the invasion to end. Keep the soapy water handy!

It depends on what kind of place you live in. When I lived in Florida I had a little trouble with them and in the winter there was no difference. So I moved about a year later to New York and now I dont have the problem. As I said it really depends on your winters.
