What is an unhealthy amount of time spent on the internet?

Asked by live_rose (1223points) November 29th, 2010

Yesterday I spent six or so hours online (a bellow average amount for me.) I spend most of my time on my computer, because sadly I have no social life outside of my laptop. And I’m beginning to wonder how much internet is too much internet? (And yes I see the hypocrisy of asking this question on a website.)

If you choose to spend your free time on the internet, there is nothing wrong with that. If you spend time that you should or need to be doing other important tasks than you have a problem.

Unhealthy in what way, I wonder. I was listening to a psychologist on the radio this morning who said you can’t be addicted to good things. If your time spent on the internet is good, then it wouldn’t be an addiction. If you are using internet time to run away from things, then it becomes a problem.

Healthy and unhealthy time are different for everyone, and I can’t answer this question because of it.

More than 27 hours a day and it becomes questionable.

@wundayatta I second your response.

In addition to that, though, I might add that I think balance is key to life as well. For me, if it seems like I’ve been online too much or spent too many hours playing video games, I’ll get outside and go for a run or do something active. I think if you have to ask yourself “am I spending too much time on the internet?” – you may be out of balance.

I guess like anything you enjoy or is healthy in moderation it becomes unhealthy if it interferes with the rest of your life or relationships or prevents you from doing other things you should do or need to do.

I too have no social life. I spend a lot of time on the Internet. I don’t think that we can actually define what is too much as such. However, I do think we need to find some social life outside the internet, physical touch and closeness is important. IN the meantime though if the internet is keeping you in touch with people on some level, it’s certainly better than nothing. My doctor has ordered me to get up and walk around my house for 10 minutes every hour and walk outside for one mile every day. It is unhealthy for me not to do this.

”...I have no social life outside of my laptop…”

We live the life we build for ourselves. Who can say when it’s time to stop building? Who’s to say when it’s too late to start?

It’s unhealthy to just sit around. It’s also unhealthy to stare at a screen too long without breaks. Our eyes need to look into the distance too. If we don’t do this our bodies get very tense.

I knew I drank too much when I asked “Do I drink too much?” Shut off the computer for a day and see what happens.

i think its bad whenever it interferes with your real life. or cause issues like eye strain or something. other than that, i say just stay on as much as on want, just dont forget about the outside world C:
