Thoughts on the HCG diet?

Asked by mrlaconic (3990points) December 4th, 2010

I have some weight to drop and I am going to see a nutritionist on Monday morning. One of my friends has been on the HCG diet and told me it is working for her. The nutritionist is also offering this diet program. They have been open a long time and are well known in town so I don’t think they would offer a snake oil diet. Also nothing I find on line says its a scam. I’m just looking for more opinions. Yes I know what it is and what it comes from. I a also aware that it is a very low calorie diet. What are your experiences?

My experience with diets is less calories in and more calories out. By that I mean eat less and work out more. Fad diets are not usually a good way to go simply because most people will put the weight on after they’ve lost it. If you feel it will work for you and you won’t put the weight on, then I would say give it a go. Just don’t depend on calories alone to lose weight.

I had not heard of this before my first thought was- “HCG? Human chorionic gonadotropin? What does that have to do with a diet?”

So I looked it up. And yep- it’s HCG injections! Plus a 500 calorie a day diet!

This is stupid and dangerous.

The ONLY long-term solution to weight loss is eating somewhat less and exercising a lot more. Fad diets don’t work for the long-term,

The HCG is not influencing the weight loss; it’s the starvation diet! and that is unhealthy.

I don’t think so for HCG.

A diet is what you eat, FOR EVER. When people go on a diet, it’s supposed to be permanent, if it’s not, your body will get you back to the weight it was use to both said “diet”. The way the word diet is used now is very misleading. A diet is what you eat for life, and not how little of it you are “allowed to eat.” Food is good for you remember?

Walk. Stephen Fry said he lost 84 lbs. walking, do it, he is infallible. Strolling and listening to audiobooks, sounds nice right? Eat food, if you don’t know what food is, it is ingredients are ones you can pronounce and there should be a small amount of them. You should be the one to “process” the food.

Also I would suggest eating food more often in smaller amounts, in fact maybe even eating more food per day. Snacking every two hours, and drinking plenty of fluids makes you feel great. This is the way people use to eat for thousands of years, and will increase you metabolism.

Learn how to cook, know what you are eating.

I’ve heard that another good rule is to vary color on a plate (and also variety in general is good).

Why don’t you forget about fad diets and just start giving your body the exercise that it needs in order to maintain it’s good health? Don’t restrict calories, BURN them!
