How do people get ice pick scars?

Asked by Plone3000 (668points) December 5th, 2010

Every now and then I see someone with indented “ice pick“or “box” acne scars, I am lucky to not have any of these. I get very little acne, but when I do I uncontrollably pick at it( I know, I know, I should stop). I do have pink faded scars above my skin, but lucky no ice pick scars.

So I was wondering, how do people get ice pick scars? Is it from extreme face picking? Prolonged acne? Genetics?

Also, how can I prevent ice pick scars?

It is deep acne, something no medication, no TV ads, no amount of cleaning face can help. It is horrible, painful, and never actually goes away. My mother, at 67, still gets those deeeep pimples that hurt to the bone. It’s a sort of disease, like rosacea, it infects the pores. Infections leave scars. So does picking a scab. Stop picking. A scar on your face looks worse, the older you get. Trust me on that.

I believe that it is due to picking at pimples. I’ve read many articles on acne, and from what I remember, it possibly might be because picking at it made the pimple go further into the skin and cause a huge long indent.. scarring the face.

To prevent such scars, I’d advise you: Do not pick at your pimples! Don’t touch your face with your hands unless your hands are washed and cleaned! AND be careful with your facial skin, it is sensitive.

Quit picking! The more you mess with your pimples, the longer they’ll take to heal!

My sister has a couple of scars like what your describe on her face from when she had chicken pox. She didn’t get it until she was 16, so it was one of the worse cases. They’ve faded somewhat, though.
