Have you ever found a chance to wear your grad dress again, after you've graduated?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) December 6th, 2010

Since I’m in the mood of speaking of dresses, I also wanted to see if anyone has used their grad dress for more than just grad?

It seems like such a shame, to wear it just for grad, and then to just leave it there- never to be worn again.

Has anyone ever found another reason to take out that grad dress?

What did you do with your grad dress? Did you sell it? Keep it? Still have it?

No. I grew out of mine before the end of the summer of that year, which was quite a number of years ago. I doubt it would ever be in style again. In any case, it went to the nearest charity shop when I cleaned out my room before heading off to university that autumn.

Yes, and often. Considering I wore jeans and a t-shirt that read “New York Fucking City” and yet I live in LA California. lol

I didn’t have a specific dress I wore for graduation. I just wore a nice skirt and shirt under my cap and gown. The clothes I wore at my high school graduation are gone now, but I still have the clothes I wore for my college graduation.

I wore slacks and a dress shirt. Both were secondhand purchases that did much cost much and I was not particularly attached to them. My graduation cap and gown are in a blue paper bag with all the materials for my theoretical scrapbook.

I don’t make it a point to purchase clothing for a special occasion and then never wear them again, though. It seems like such a waste.

I didn’t have a “grad dress” I don’t think. I’m not even sure what a “grad dress” is. For high school graduation, I don’t remember, but I probably wore blue jeans, a black leotard and one of those gauzy plaidish knitted India blouses over that, under my gown, because that’s what I was wearing those days. For college graduation I wore a red and white, non-floral print skirt and a white blouse, I think, I have pictures of me from graduation somewhere, but no gown and I didn’t attend my grad school (M.A.) graduation. What’s a “grad dress?” Do you wear it under your gown, instead of a gown or to graduation parties and is it for high school graduation or college graduation? Really, I am not trying to be dense but I honestly don’t know what a “grad dress” is and I’ve graduated at least three times in my life.

Lol, I thought it was an interesting question.. looks like the wrong crowd to ask.

@Jwtd LOL too. Yeah, it really does seem like the wrong crowd, doesn’t it? Me certainly among them as I’m not even sure what the term means. :-)

I’m sensing that the idea of a “graduation dress” is not as common as @curiouscat supposes.

Different schools have different graduation practices. For example, at a private school my cousin attended, the girls graduated in white ball gowns, many of which were repurposed as wedding dresses later.

Most schools have you wear a cap and gown, and as most of the answers have pointed out, you can wear anything you want underneath.

Yes. I never thought of my grad dress as being a one shot deal like my wedding dress.

How formal is your dress?

Hmm, the only time I wore a ‘grad dress’ was for my college graduation because I was pregnant with my first kid and needed something stretchy – I actually wear that dress all the time now to work.

@lillycoyote; haha. my bad, I should have stated that it’s a dress for the graduation banquet… Did you guys have that? It was a formal banquet..

After the cap and gown ceremony (I wore black dress pants, black shoes, and a white blouse under it), we had a banquet for the graduates. All the girls had “grad dresses” as in, fancy gown, and the guys wore suits and ties.

@JLeslie; that’s good! I don’t want my graduation gown to be a one shot deal either!
It’s quite formal.. hmm.. like a princess dress.. hahaha, that’s how I like to think of it. It’s dark blue, and has many little decorative beady things on it, and the back is lacy. It’s got two skinny straps.

@BarnacleBill; you are correct. But it is my fault in not being descriptive enough. I had a migraine at the time I was asking this question, and after posting it, I collapsed in the dark on a sofa.. and awoke at 1AM. haha..

@Jwtd; =D, lol laugh(ed) out loud

Never have. I couldn’t even tell you what I was wearing on my graduation day.

@curiouscat The banquet you are describing sounds more like my senior prom than anything else. We didn’t have a banquet after graduation. I was able to wear my prom dress again, as a wedding dress. I had bought a informal wedding gown as my prom dress and used it as my wedding dress when my ex-husband and I got married a few years after I finished high school.

@curiouscat Gown, princess, hmmm, like with a full long skirt? I think it will likely be a one shot deal. Sorry. Unless you have seen women at parties wear similar dresses to events like weddings and other formal gatherings? If you don’t see grown ups wearing that type of dress, well you are about to be all grown up basically.

lillycoyote's avatar

@curiouscat If you’re talking about high school, there may have been a graduation banquet but I don’t remember. I was in the arty-hippie-bohemian crowd and we didn’t do things like that. :-) I did go to my junior prom but I went in a borrowed black dress and my boyfriend in black tux just to be contrary.
