What's a good place to send my parents who are in NYC area for their 40th anniversary?

Asked by melinda (8points) December 7th, 2010

I’m thinking cute bed & breakfast, not too far of a drive, and fun adventure…Something 2 night special trip that they would not otherwise treat themselves to…Yes, they hike, love good food, and museums—no they aren’t into spas/massages…

Hey, they have been together for 40 years! they deserve much more than a bed and breakfast. send them for a week to Jamaica. they will love you for it and will remember it the rest of their lives. i have been twice and the water is warm and breathtaking.

After all, 40 years together today….....deserves a gold medal.

How about where they had their honeymoon?

If they are in the New York City area, how about a cute B&B in the Hudson River Valley? The scenery is breathtaking, and it is filled with cute towns and antique shops, etc.

I have not been upstate in a long time but I would assume Woodstock is still very art and music oriented, and not far from NYC in the Catskills. But, it is coooolllllldddd outside! So not the best time for a trip north unless they love hanging out by the fireplace.

Another suggestion, if we are going to ignore the cold, is Washington DC. Four hour train ride, less if you pay for the fast train, and the museums are fantastic and free!

Lastly FL is usually inexpensive in January and early February. President’s day in FL is the kick off to massive amounts of vacationers through Easter, so prices are generally very reasonable, both air fare and hotels after new years and before presidents day. If FL interests you I can give you more details. I will say this, for more of a guarantee of beach weather stay south of Sarasota and Vero. It is a good time for Disney, no lines, but it can be chilly in Orlando that time of year, hit or miss.

Another idea cruises leave from NY to The Carribbean and Bermuda, some as cheap as $500 per person for a week. http://www.vacationstogo.com/ticker.cfm

Cooperstown. This Saturday is candlelight evening at the Farmer’s Museum, plus there’s the Fenimore Museum. If you would like more info let me know.

Thought I would give you the link to the adirondack route for Amtrak. There are links for parks and trails, maybe B&B also, not sure.

How bout the Castle in Tarrytown?

JLeslie's avatar

I forgot about The Castle that’s a good one @jca I lived not too far from there when I was little, never been.

@JLeslie: i gave my parents a gift certificate to The Castle about two years ago, and when i went there to purchase it, it was holiday season and it was so beautifully decorated for the holidays. I wanted to sit by the fireplace and just hang out! I would recommend to anybody to check out The Castle in Tarrytown NY.

@JLeslie I love Bethel Woods, where the Woodstock museum is. Saw both the NY Philharmonic and the Boston Pops there last summer, and it was great.

@Dr_Dredd when I was young I used to spend summers with my grandparents at Sacks Lodge in Saugerties, not far from Woodstock. I remember driving there, my grandfather was an artist, so I assume we went to see the art galleries. Honestly, I was so young I only vaguely remember Woodstock, but I remember my summers in the Catskills very well overall. Happy times.

@JLeslie Yup. My grandparents had a bungalow in Monticello, and the whole family would congregate in the summer. Good times, indeed.
