What kind of mattress should I buy?

Asked by SexyTeacher2011 (85points) December 8th, 2010

I need a new mattress, but I’m overwhelmed and confused with all the options that are out there. I am very curvy and so that makes me think I need a really soft mattress. But, I also really love sleeping on my stomach and I would think that a firm mattress would be better for that. (I’m trying to break the habit of sleeping on my stomach, but it’s hard to!)

My sister mentioned a Sleep Number bed, but I don’t know. I thought maybe a memory foam bed…but I don’t have anyone who sleeps next to me and aren’t those mainly about not disturbing your partner? The innerspring mattress I have now lasted about 5 years and now has a bad bow in the middle. I wake up every morning with a sore neck!

Help! I need some experience or advice!

When I had neck pain, it was (partially) from sleeping on my stomach with my arms up craddling my pillow (instead of down by my side). Once I stopped doing that, it got a lot better. I changed by getting a body pillow, and rolling onto that so that I was sleeping on my side with my arms down, but with an emphasis on pressure against my tummy.

I have this mattress, but I have no idea if it’s available outside of Denver.

Yes, that is exactly what I do with my arms…you are right, I need to get a body pillow, it’s funny, I already thought maybe that would be good idea…..

I have had a sleep number bed for the last three years and I do not like it it. The problem I have is that the system is designed for you to find ONE position and set the number and stay there. But a real person does’t stay in one spot all right… so the number that is good for your back isn’t good for your stomach or your side… so then I am always adjusting myself..

The most amazing bed I have ever slept on was the one at the Hilton. You can buy them Here

That will be the next bed that I buy… hopefully early next year.

I <3 my pillowtop! I also <3 my pillow fort that I sleep in (3 body pillows and 3 regular pillows) that makes me keep a decent posture while sleeping.

I need a new mattress, too. I laid down on a memory foam bed in a store, and it was heavenly! I have heard that they can be hot, though. Since I’m always cold, that’s not a deal breaker for me, but may be for you.

Also, I agree with the pillow people, above. Propping certain areas with pillows makes a huge difference for me. I’m a side sleeper, and use 2 under my head, one long one to hug against my stomach, and another between my knees.

This may not sound like great advice, but it worked for me. I went to a mattress store that had lots of varieties to choose from. I took about 45 minutes and layed on mattresses and compared them until I found the one that felt best.

There are a lot of good one, but my only advise…don’t buy a cheap one.

Pillow people unite! I just told a potential date that no boys are allowed in my pillow fort… because there’s no more room in my bed for me, a pillow fort, and another person. :D

@klutzaroo I know! All the pillows take up all the room. So dates can sleep on the couch. Or just go home already (I got mine…)
