Why do cats like to sleep on the hood of the vehicle?

Asked by Ranimi23 (1917points) December 10th, 2010

Perhaps this is an interesting question. The only answer that seems reasonable is that the car had recently been parked in the garage. Cat looking for a place heating and the hood still warm and provides him the required heat in the cold winter days. But how does this fit in with the days of summer?

Maybe this is not the right anser.

Because it’s warm in winter and if it’s in a garage in summer, it might be cooler.

I think @rts486 got it exactly right. Cats also like to be up off the ground where they can see what’s going on. As long as the cat doesn’t climb into the engine to stay warm…we had a cat lose a tail that way. :(

Also in the summer, the warmth of the sun reflects from and heats the car surface, which the cat likes (it is basking).

@MissAusten We had a cat lose a toe and a bit of an ear that way…AFTER he destroyed all the belts and some of the rubber hoses in the engine. That was one tough cat.

Totally agree with @rts486 . Especially if it’s a Cat-a-Lac.
