How many senses do humans have?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43689points) December 13th, 2010

We all learned there are 5: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste.
What about balance or sense of direction? Are there others that don’t fit into neat categories? Can you think of senses other animals have that we do not?

I think there are many that have different abilities such as spiritual gifts that are not included in the 5 senses.

Having sonar like a bat would be delightful!.Why just swallow bugs during the day on my bike rides when I can find them on my nightly walks too? ;)

Apparently some claim to have ESP or the “sixth sense”.

I see dead people.

Echolocation, biosonar – Nice! (Although someone might argue that is hearing. But there is much more to it. Timing?)

OK, for now, I can add spiritual and ESP.

Common sense, you’d imagine would be prevalent. Although there does seem to be a shortage of that in some places.

Communication with the dead. Clairvoyance, medium, opening the 3rd eye (6th Chakra).

Revelation (seeing the future).

@ucme Common sense.Interesting. We know it when we see it but it does not “map” into any of the basic 5.

Is temperature included in touch?

nikipedia's avatar

Wikipedia includes balance/acceleration, temperature, kinesthetic sense, pain, direction, and a whole bunch of “other.”

@nikipedia That is great list. I’ll check. Balace /acceleration used the bones in the inner ear. It certainly is not hearing. I don’t know what we use to determine of direction unless we inadvertantly use the sun. Temperature and pain might be in “touch” but they very different from texture, or pressure.

@worriedguy: Even cooler than the sun…. magnets in your nose!!!

“Humans have magnetite deposits in the bones of the nose, specifically the sphenoidal/ethmoid sinuses[6] Beginning in the late 1970s, the group of Robin Baker at the University of Manchester began to conduct experiments that purported to exhibit magnetoception in humans: people were disoriented and then asked about certain directions; their answers were more accurate if there was no magnet attached to their head.[7] These results could not be reproduced by other groups and the evidence remains ambiguous.[8] Recently some other evidence for human magnetoception has been put forward: low-frequency magnetic fields can produce an evoked response in the brains of human subjects.”

@nikipedia Don’t carrier pigeons navigate that way? It makes sense that there might be a carryover from one species to another. There are a lot of “junk” sections in our DNA. This might be one of them. I sure to like it. I wonder if it is possible to test it by disturbing the magnetic field ( rotate it 90 degrees) and see if the person gets lost . I picture a collar that reads the earth’s magnetic field and energizes a series of electromagnets that swamp it out and move it to a different position for testing.

Here is a little on DNA.

Most people know that DNA is the ‘blueprint of life’ and is located in every cell of the body. In addition to each chromosome 2 strand double helix of DNA, there are an additional 10 etheric strands of DNA available to each human, which have been dormant since the beginning of recorded history. Each additional strand possesses attributes that permit the individual to perform greater human accomplishments. Scientists acknowledge that we currently only use 3% of our current 2 strand DNA. Thus we live in a society where people are sick, unhappy, stressed out, create wars, have difficulty experiencing love, and are totally disconnected with the universe. Most people have to meditate for many years just to have a so-called ‘mystical’ experience, that’s how disconnected we are now. Imagine activating 100% of your 2 strand DNA, PLUS 10 additional strands! You will go from using 10% of your brain to becoming a multi-dimensional being with psychic, telepathic, and manifestation abilities beyond anything you’ve ever dreamed of. Plus, you will stop the aging process and actually start to rejuvenate to look and feel YOUNGER. This is the Original Divine Blueprint, what man USED to be. It has been written that Jesus had 12 strands of DNA activated. There have been children born throughout the history of humanity to raise the frequency of the planet that have more than 2 strands of DNA active – they are known as Indigo children. These are the incredibly intelligent, loving, and amazing children that are being mistakenly diagnosed as having A.D.D. because they are too smart to pay attention in class. Your DNA is your blueprint of life and is what controls every single function inside each of your cells. If you change your DNA, you really will change your life.

I can only think about in – physical senses. Such as sensing when you’re going to have your menstruation, sexual attraction,self-starvation,etc.

1. sight (visual)
2. hearing (auditory)
3. smell (olfactory)
4. taste (gustatory)

5–8. touch: The skin senses (he skin senses are considered four separate senses)
5. heat
6. cold
7. pressure
8. pain

9. motion (kinesthetic)
10. balance (vestibular)

that’s all I can come up with on the spot feel free to add on any others I may have missed.

Memory acts like a sixth sense.

Intuition seems like a seventh sense but isn’t. It’s our unconscious mind hard at work, no peeping toms allowed.
