What does it mean to have your life in order?

Asked by ninjacolin (14246points) December 15th, 2010

Ever hear that expression?

“Bob has his life in order.”

Bunch’a stray questions come up I guess, have at it:
-What does an “orderly life” look like?
-What would a “disorderly life” look like?
-Do you know people who you would say have their lives in order? -What are they like?
-Are you one of ‘em?

I think it means that you have your insurance lined up, your funeral arrangements made, and your will made out.
I am not one of them.

I will just answer for myself – it would mean I’m not upping my meds, trying to kill my mother or barely affording necessities.

I would say to have insurance lined up, funeral arrangements made, etc., would cause me to say “Bob had his affairs in order.” To me, “Bob has his life in order,” means that he has his priorities right, he has paid his debts, he goes to work on time and does a good job, he has some sense of security, etc.”

@Kayak8 : Oh dear, if that’s the case, then it’s hopeless for me.

A lot of people are very disorganized and have no idea where they are going nor how to get there. Others are less disorganized but not all that orderly.

A person with their life in order is a person who has their shit together. They are relatively clear about where they are going and how they will get there. So, if the goal is financial stability, then things like life insurance and health insurance and disability insurance and wills and bank accounts and etc will be in place and carefully documented so it is easy to manage them.

An orderly life is something I both seek and try to destroy,. I need security, but I also need drama.

@chyna she covered it. Called, “having your ducks in a row” in these parts. By having this done, it will much easier on your next of kin when that time come.

It makes me think of this quote:

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

Wow, I never applied it to passing on. I was thinking for a younger person.

I guess I see it as having your priorities in order where all your money and time isn’t being blown on frivolities. Having savings, having a dependable job, having your education lined up, having acquired social skills.. Essentially being someone who’s ready for the day.

Thanks for the replies.
