Was it really sold on ebay?

What is the story behind this 80’s song 867–5309/Jenny? I know it was a real number of a girl named Jenny, but is it true that this number caused a lot of commotion? Is it true it was sold on eBay?

Please use google from now on. That [snopes article] was the second hit on google for “8674309”. The first hit was the wikipedia page. If you google “8675309 ebay” there’s a over 8million hits with links to relevant stories.
