Two of my friends, one an undergraduate who majored in Maya studies, another an anthropology professor, say it’s “Maya,” not “Mayan”; scholarly literature says “Maya.” I imagine this is how the Maya pronounce their name, since they are still around.

I don’t know any famous Maya figures offhand.
