Identifying person to address cover letter?

Asked by PrimeMinister3 (29points) December 21st, 2010

If a google search/LinkedIn search does not yield the name of the HR manager or appropriate person to address a cover letter to, what is the best alternative method to find the name of a real live person to use in the salutation?

You could call the company directly and ask for the name of the HR manager or the manager hiring for the position you are interested in.

You could simply address your letter Dear Sir or Madam.

One is a google search of the company’s web site. This can be achieved by a search like this:

director of marketing site:.whatever.com

You may want to play around with that, but that site: command at the end is key. It limits the search to a specific web site.

Another thing you can do is go to a library (particularly a school library, and especially one with a business program) and check their databases to see if you can find a name.

Other than that, you can call the office and ask.

Just call the company and ask “what is the name of your hr. . . coordinator/director/generalist etc.

Another method is to address it to the owner, GM, CEO of said company. B/C in this event (even though that GM or whatever won’t look at it) they will pass it on the the HR person, and since it had their name, they will ensure follow up from HR.
