Do you think the recent fluther happenings might be a positive for those of us that like fluther the way it is?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) December 22nd, 2010

Think about it. The path for fluther was either to go big, like twitter (barf) or be acquired by someone interested in the technology. It’s probably going to be a challenge, but I think we may get to have our cake and eat it too.I may be totally wrong but who knows. I like the site the way it is, kind of closeknit. I’m going to go along for the ride and see where it goes. You?

In spite of yesterday’s panic reaction, I have some hopes. After all, the boys could have just turned off the lights and walked away, but they didn’t! This is a chance for the community to really put it out there as so many have offered (special thanks and kudos to JP, BTW) and keep on truckin. I like some of the noobs already, and I’m staying positive! (New Years resolutions, anyone???)

Change is inevitable. I remember reading all the “Oldbies” reactions to the massive Answer Bag migration I was part of here a year ago. It was a mix of horror “go away” “we don’t want y’all messing up our cozy atmosphere” to “very cool to have so many new voices and faces”.

Seems like we are experience a bit of the same again here…I think it’s kinda neat! Yes I said “neat”!! lol!!

JilltheTooth's avatar

I think it’s swell that you said “neat”...

BoBo1946's avatar

Remember AB @Cruiser ! Hope that doesn’t happen.

chyna's avatar

I can only have a positive outlook on this situation.

The lights are on. You’re still here. I’m still here and we still have lots of other things we should be doing.
I’m sticking around. (Unless I have to Tweet my answ….

Ran out of space. Sorry!

As a member of the infamous Wisdm mass migration, and an onlooker of the AB migration, it’s been interesting to watch the changes that have occurred with each wave…
@Cruiser said ‘neat’! giggle! That’s so groovy that he said ‘neat’!

I read an article online yesterday about the Twitter/Fluther situation and the article mentioned that Twitter did not acquire Fluther itself and that Fluther would continue as a separate entity. It went further though, and made special note of the fact that this was unusual. Apparently in most cases like this when creators of a site were hired by larger organizations, the organization also acquired their sites and then immediately shuttered them. So, whatever Andrew and Ben did when they joined Twitter, they did it in such a way that Fluther lives and Twitter didn’t get to own it and then kill it. That says a lot to me. They made sure we are all still here. They didn’t sacrifice Fluther to achieve their ambitions. Good on them for that!

AmWiser's avatar

I feel somewhat better about the changes that are about to happen after reading this article on how Twitter acquires people. So I’ll be hanging in here until there’s a mass exodus. tehehehe

Cruiser's avatar

@diavolobella I think what many here are missing the point on and that some have already touched on is that most if not all of the brains and brawn that kept the lights on here as @worriedguy said are now over at Twitter. Just think of all the times this place had a malfunction and Tim had it back up and running in no time! Now we will have to wait until B or A find time to break out the tools to fix things. Could get dicey here or maybe Andrews forthcoming announcement will advise us of arrangements that have been made.

I also think it is pretty “far-out” that so many are so concerned! ;)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Cruiser I think we have a pretty good thing going here. That A/B shit was just ridiculous.

diavolobella's avatar

@Cruiser I haven’t missed that point at all, but the fact remains that if Andrew and Ben had allowed Twitter to shutter Fluther as part of the deal, that would be a moot point, wouldn’t it? Fluther is still here, so maybe we can take a moment to be appreciative of that first and then work on keeping it going.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

So there’s no confusion, when I refer to A/B it’s the name of another site, not any reference to Andrew and Ben.

Cruiser's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I still miss the wild west anything goes atmosphere of the old AB. That was fun ass shit!!

BoBo1946's avatar

loll… yeah Cruse, no holes barred! yeeehaaaaaaa Ridem cowboy!!!!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Cruiser That was alot of fun. This is a lot more sedate compaired to that wild free wheeling style.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Sam with Wisdm guys! Although we did a fairly good job of keep the crap out. This IS sedate! But….they’re here and Wisdm and AB aren’t.
Anyways, I guess we’re famous now. Bleh.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Dutchess_III I’ve learned a lot more here. I’ve gotten into some intense discussions and debates with a few of the jellys. A/B was just run and gun.

marinelife's avatar

I am all for hanging in and seeing what happens while continuing to answer and ask questions.

downtide's avatar

I will stay and continue participating. I’ve already noticed an upswing in the amount of activity from new members and I think that’s a good thing. Those who enjoy it, and become part of the comunity, will stay, just as happened with the AB migration. Some of us stayed and the rest, for whom Fluther didn’t suit, disappeared again. My only concern is on the technical side, and whether the staff can be found to keep the site running.

But if they decide to make us answer questions in 140 characters or less, I’m outta here. :-D

seazen's avatar

Agree with the OP.

seazen's avatar

@jill I think it’s grand that you thought it was swell that he said neat. JUst saying.

;-)

Eggie's avatar

I think it will be a positive thing. I am open to change….

Jude's avatar

I’m sick of hearing about it.

Let’s wait and see.

cookieman's avatar

Frankly, they’ll have to kick me out (disable my account and block me). I’ll ask and answer my own questions if I have to.

chyna's avatar

@cprevite No way. I’ll be here too. You and I will be asking each other questions.

cookieman's avatar

@chyna: Perfect. We’ll have tea and cookies.

seazen's avatar

Can I come? I have sage in my garden.

augustlan's avatar

Tea? Cookies? Sage? Sounds good to me. :)

JilltheTooth's avatar

They’ll have to pry Fluther from my cold, dead hands. I want cookies, too!

Eggie's avatar

did someone say cookies?..

seazen's avatar

Did someone say boobs?

diavolobella's avatar

boob cookies…..

JilltheTooth's avatar

I tried to find a picture of boob cookies for you, Zen, but I guess my search skills aren’t quite up to it. But I tried. <sigh>

JilltheTooth's avatar

Well, found this, best I could do…

chyna's avatar

@marinelife OMG! What a great picture! You rock!

JilltheTooth's avatar

Ever notice how Zen always gets us to supply him with boobs?

Dutchess_III's avatar

So..what would be get if we crossed a Zen with a bob_?

cookieman's avatar

boob sandwich

JilltheTooth's avatar

Now there’s a lovely visual!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Not that I mind, nothing better than boob sandwiches, but how did this go from fluther to boob sandwiches? I guess I’ll stick around for the boobies.

JilltheTooth's avatar

It’s a Zen thing…

cookieman's avatar

And a @bob_ thing.

chyna's avatar

deleted by me.

cookieman's avatar

But apparently not @chyna‘s thing.

augustlan's avatar

It’s how we roll. Serious issues ending in food and sex. ;)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Or, @augustlan All of that at the same time! You have a messed up bed with crumbs in it!

chyna's avatar

@cprevite Oh no, I love sex and food. In that order.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Is this the part where @augustlan gets nekkid?

chyna's avatar

^^ I hope, I hope, I hope.

augustlan's avatar

<doing the nakey dance in ur fluther>

Dutchess_III's avatar

Adirondackwannabe's avatar
