Asked by classykeyser (508points) December 22nd, 2010

Of these two, which is the worst excuse people use to explain away the terrible things they do?

Booze in my experience. It is not an excuse for cheating.

Either one sucks. Look in the mirror. That’s the one responsible.

I would tend toward booze as well, myself being a wretched alcoholic, but by answering booze, the burden of proving that there is a god falls on you. To me, blaming god is like blaming J.D. Salinger.

God. Booze is an excuse used to excuse behavior that one knows is wrong, and is often just stupid. God is an excuse used to justify behavior that should be recognized as wrong, but the person justifying it believes is right.

No one is going to try to convince you “no, this is right, I know because I’m really drunk.” Insert “God says so” after because – and that’s why it’s the worst. The worst.

Historically, the “God excuse” bad behavior seems to involve the heinous treatment of large groups of people, where the “booze excuse” bad behavior is mostly individually based. No justifiable behavior from either excuse, IMO.

Either way you are getting punished! Not sure which is worse…the hangover the next day or the wrath of God?

iamthemob's avatar

@Cruiser – I don’t think we can separate those…one is proven to happen, the other is not – but who’s to say that the former is not in fact the latter? ;-)

Interesting Q – I would say god because at least you’re sober when you’re using that excuse.

Deja_vu's avatar

God is the worst excuse… Booze is the more logical excuse.

You left out genes. body genes, not bluejeans.

I’m pretty sure more people have died due to religious fanatics than drunk drivers lol…..

Deja_vu's avatar

Blaming God seems to be a cop out…. I blame blue~jeans.

God! Without a doubt.

using booze as an excuse is loathsome. It may be an explanation, but using it as an excuse avoids responsibility. That’s why AA’s twelve steps suggest making amends and taking responsibility for one’s actions.

Using God as an excuse is just self righteous bullshit. A loving God does not condone bad behavior.

I agree with @zenvelo completely.

The God excuse is worse by far. Who burns the witches, goes on crusades, rapes little boys, murders in the name of Booze? Just sayin’

The booze excuse is only “good” for cheating, poor interpersonal behavior, vehicular manslaughter, a few other minor things.

God is great for the bigger things, genocide, misogyny, homophobia, slavery, sexual repression, child rape and crashing into buildings with planes. The God excuse is the worst.

Cruiser's avatar

@iamthemob Can you imagine how out of control things might get if no one believed in the wrath of God?

everephebe's avatar

Oh and the excuse I have for answering that way is booze.

diavolobella's avatar

I think God is a worse excuse, because when you said God made you do something awful, you are saying that you think it’s actually okay or maybe even a good thing. You justify your actions and declare them to have God’s stamp of approval. You are acting knowingly and soberly.

Booze makes you act stupidly, but it doesn’t tell you it’s okay the next day.

thekoukoureport's avatar

With the booze it’s “the devil made me do it” which is god and around the hypocrisy wheel spins.

ratboy's avatar

Bad behavior needs no excuse—it’s an end in itself.

diavolobella's avatar

Everyone knows too much booze is a bad thing, but few people think too much God is.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

What a great question.

I have to agree with @diavolobella, booze can make you act stupidly, but you typically regret it later. Religious zeal tends to be a longer lasting affliction.

tinyfaery's avatar

I think the separation for me lies in the fact that alcohol is an excuse and a reason (alcohol has perceivable effects on the brain and body), but the idea that a god wants something to happen exists solely within the mind of the believers and can never be independently identified; therefore it can never be the reason something occurs.

Fairylover78's avatar

Im with @iamthemob on both statements here. In my opinion way too many bad things have been carried out in the “name of God” and for the most part these people can’t be reasoned with or their minds changed…. even a really drunk person can be reasoned with to a degree and if not, just keep giving them more booze til they pass out, no harm no foul, the hangover will be a bitch but they won’t remember making an ass out of themselves the next day, the God made me do it people will not only remember what they did but they will actually feel it was justified. So yeah, God did it.

daytonamisticrip's avatar

Using religion to defend a bad deed is just pathetic, and besides a lot of people don’t even believe in God. Worst defense in the history of defenses. At least with alcohol everyone knows it’s real.

gondwanalon's avatar

There is no excuse for intentional bad behavior.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

God because you can’t prove it’s existence.

everephebe's avatar

Worst excuse for good behavior would be God too. Think about it. “Well I only helped her so I could get into heaven.”

Booze is an ok excuse for good behavior, “I would’ve killed that guy if I was sober! Instead I bought him a drink.”

I can picture someone saying that.

NerdyKeith's avatar

Probably booze, as its more common these days. More people are becoming less devout; but there are still plenty of careless drinkers out there (religious and non-religious).
