Which of Roald Dahl's books do you think transferred best to the big screen?

Asked by ucme (50047points) December 22nd, 2010

Yeah, just watched The Witches last night with the kids, it was the umpteenth viewing of that movie in our house. Never tire of watching it & for me it’s the best movie based on Dahl’s delightful stories. Now I realise & absolutely agree that Willy Wonka was a brilliant piece of storytelling that worked marvellously on screen, but the aforementioned movie just shades it for me. So, getting back to the question at hand. Have you a favourite movie spawned from his works & if so, which is it & why?

I second the witches and also the willy wonka (but not the remake which although closer to the book was not as fun)

Fantastic Mr Fox – just loved the way the animation was done.

The Witches is brilliant. I quite like James and the Giant Peach too.

I think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was fantastic. What really stood out for me was the brilliant selection of Gene Wilder to play Willy Wonka along with a very nice supporting cast for the children, the great sets in the chocolate factory, and the decent plot line. I do think though that the original movie should have followed the book more.

The second movie, Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory followed the book better but other than that, it was an absolute train wreck of a remake of the outstanding first movie.

I also loved Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. And then there’s James and the Giant Peach. Very nostalgic for me.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda was a good movie

Fantastic Mr. Fox was really well done, except that I didn’t care for the voice over actors that they chose. They sounded all wrong to me, especially Meryl Streep as the Fox’s wife and who-ever did the voice for their son. It just sounded all wrong. I think they should have used British voices. But the animation was superb. And I still can’t figure out why the farmer was so mean to his banjo playing son, what was up with that? The music was excellent and un-expected.

I love love LOVE Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder and agree that although the one with Johnny Depp might have been closer to the book, it stank to high heaven. I just can’t get the creepy Michael Jackson-esque vision of Johnny Depp out of my mind. Although the young British actor who played Charlie was great.

James and the Giant Peach…

he wrote that, didn’t he? That movie was ahead of its time.

“The Man From the South”. Much better than movies made from his kid books.

Matilda! I watched the movie first and then read the book and the plot seemed to flow so smoothly with both. I had such empathy for the little girl in the book because she felt like no one understood her, that her parents were strangers she couldn’t possibly be related to and she loved to read and these are things I felt very strongly when I was a little girl.
