Anyone recommend exercises that don't require me to go to a gym?

Asked by cletrans2col (2395points) December 22nd, 2010

I can’t afford to get a gym membership, so I’m looking for ideas on exercises to do. I need to lose weight. All ideas are appreciated!

I have worked out at home for many years. I use the combination of a treadmill for running, alternated with workout DVDs. They are very effective and there is a huge variety to choose from – far more than you’d ever think judging from what is available in stores. If you want to lose weight, you will need to combine cardio for fat burning with strength training to build muscle and flexibility workouts to keep you from injuring yourself and to maintain your, well, flexibility. Variety is the spice of life and will keep you motivated and interested, so be open to lots of different types of workouts. You’ll eventually find ones that really engage you. My favorite DVDs are by Ellen Barrett who does Pilates/Yoga/Fusion workouts and Tracy Effinger (similar style, a little more hard core). There are several great sites you could visit to learn more:

www.videofitness.com The ultimate online community for home exercisers.
www.collagevideo.com Catalog that sells home workout DVDs and equipment
www.totalfitnessdvds.com Another great online store.

I’ve gotten fantastic results from working out with DVDs and have even appeared in two national fitness infomercials for a fitness company whose products I used. Good luck!

Anything that involves movement. Use your imagination.

“Perfect Pushup”- handled swiveling discs of plastic. SO’s are going on two years old, no problems. They force you to have better posture during the pushup than with hands flat on the ground.

Pullup/Chinup bar- we’ve got one that hooks over any doorway without leaving marks.

Toe stretches/raises- stand with your feet together and raise onto your toes, hold for 5 seconds then lower your heels back down. Do several reps of these to help joints and ligaments work out after standing or walking a lot during your day.

We also bought a treadmill off of Craigslist last year, fantastic bargain since it folds straight up when we don’t want the walking platform in the walkways of the spare room.

Go for a walk every day. My mom does that, and has avoided needing insulin for her diabetes.

I would have suggested Wii Fit, except that would cost money.

Walk, do push-ups, crunches and sit-ups.

Consider finding a local Par Course. That allows you to combine exercises with running or walking.

You can get all kinds of yoga and pilates DVDs from your public library, as well as aerobic dance-type stuff if you’re into that kind of thing. My branch has a TON to choose from, and if you really like something, you can rip it to your computer so you can keep using it.

Jump rope. It’s a surprisingly good workout.

Walking everyday and hiking. But also watching what you eat at the same time.

If you do have some money I would suggest one or two kettlebells to help strengthen muscles; that often helps to motivate.

Walking is great. You can supplement it with a weight-training DVD work-out that you do at home.

Jumping rope is great cardio. Crunches, sit-ups, pushups, lunges, & squats are all great toning workouts. All of these can be done at home.

If you don’t have weights canned goods are great!
You can also use fit tv if you have cable. If you like dancing I would suggest turning on your favorite music and make up your own dances. You can also do lunges, push-ups, crunches, jumping-jacks, six inches (you lay on your back put both feet together raise the off the ground about 6 inches). Sex that works too. But eating right and drinking water is very important.

I detest gyms. You could try cycling though it may be the wrong time of year.

I have one of these to use my bike as an exercise bike:

I used to watch TV or catch up on reading while riding it.

Try doing power walking. It is very good for burning calories. Ordinarily as we walk faster, we go from walking to jogging to running. Each stage represents an adjustment to make the movement more efficient, but for losing weight efficiency is not what you want. Walking fast is very inefficient and therefore good for losing weight.

Check out PX90 workouts.

Put on some music and dance and clean the house. Also, make a date with some neighbors and walk in your neighborhood 45 minutes a day.
