Are you cleaning up your n00b/old family members' computers this holiday?

Asked by jaytkay (25810points) December 25th, 2010

As with most family get-togethers, I am spending some time this Christmas weekend trying to disinfect relatives’ virus- and malware-infested PCs.

Anybody else? Any funny or sad stories?

I’ve been troubleshooting Macs and iPhones all day. Lots of “why did I do that” questions and “I have no idea why you would have ever done that just don’t do it anymore” answers.

Well, my husband has been trying to get a virus off of his computer for 6–7 months now. I cannot understand why he doesn’t call someone or take it in to a shop. At this point I think all is lost. Husband has been looking for a mal-ware remover software that can run on XP in safe mode. Any suggestions?

@AmWiser I think MalwareBytes can. Have to double-check, but I’m pretty sure.

I’d love to, but my mother is afraid that if I do any kind of cleanup, I’ll crash it (you know how Windows can’t run without those Trojans holding it together). Or that I’ll install some sort of secret spy software and get all her passwords and use it to kill her!

Nope. Most of my friends and family are either computer-savvy enough to keep their shit maintained on their own, run Ubuntu, or are on the other coast.

@papayalily And people wonder why I personally think that some other people should not have access to technology. Does she have the same attitude towards her car, absolutely forbidding any mechanic to touch it?

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@jerv No. But she does insist on taking it to the dealer every time. But really, she’s crazy, clinically, and her attitude towards computers is really low on the list of “bat-shit crazy” for her.

Use this excuse for every computer problem that comes up.

No complaints here. Santa was good to me. he left me a new 20” razor flatscreen monitor, so i can talk to you guys much better, now that i can see. also, a new HP printer, that is a cadillac. it will do anything, when it comes to printing. no, it will not print $100 dolllar bills, but it is the best out there.
