Noob question: what are best ways to interact with answerers?

Asked by bccreative (215points) December 28th, 2010

Some answerers ask follow up questions. Do I simply answer using Answer button and then see it as more of a discussion in the public stream? And/or do I send a Message if I want to reply more privately?

Yes you would normally follow up by typing your response in the answer this question box. If you’re inclined to reply in a more private way, you can PM the person, but keep in mind this is an open and public forum and if someone wanted private messages they would ask for them.

Mark a great answer when you see one. Reply to people you want to reply to ,thank others for their contribution. Be genuine and you’ll get into a groove of your own.

The interaction occurs within the answer string below a question. You can reply to other answers. In fact, you really have to. Your first answer is generally in response to the original question, and then other answers are in response to what other people say.

People are generally respectful here. No name calling. Just discussion of the issues.

If you want to say something privately, you can.

If you want to address an answer specifically to someone in the public thread, it is the convention here to use the @ sign and their moniker to direct he comment to them.

@bccreative Welcome to Fluther! Generally, you’d reply in the question, using the “answer” box and button, like a discussion, as you mentioned.

Welcome to Fluther! You can answer either way depending on the content of your answer and if you want to have it viewed publicly.

One thing to keep in mind: the guidelines for the General and Social sections. Questions in the General section are intended to have their answers remain on-topic – off-topic replies will most often get moderated. However, if it’s your question, feel free to post a message of thanks or a request for more information in there.

Thank you all for your help. I reviewed guidelines and other links but they didn’t seem to address my question the way you all did here. I now have a better idea of how interactions should be carried out.
