Can wearing a hat or hoodie every day cause eventual hair loss?

Asked by jabag11 (676points) December 31st, 2010

I wear my hoodie (which is the hood of a sweatshirt or jacket) every day, about 5 hours of the day to keep extra warm. Do you think that doing this can cause eventual hair loss? That is, with time. You know, maybe in 20 years or so, I will start losing some hair since I wore a hoodie every day as a kid. I’m 19 and am a male.

Of course not. It might change your hair color or health the tiniest little bit, but I don’t think that would even happen.

I asked this question to a professional hair restoration expert and the answer was “no”.

No, but maybe it could rub off some of the hair that does grow?

If hair gets on your hat, it’s hair that was going to come out, hat or not.

I have always worn hats. I was required to wear hard hats at work, and I wore baseball caps during the day. I am bald on top.
My brother rarely wears hats. He has an office job, and needs to look businesslike. He is almost as bald as I am.

Losing your hair is genetic.

No, don’t think wearing a hoodie has any negative effect on your hair.
