I have red marks on my groin/penis, could it be an std (NSFW, graphic photos)

Asked by worriedaboutstd (35points) January 2nd, 2011

This morning I noticed red marks on my groin and what appeared to be white heads. This happens to me sometimes after shaving my groin (which I did 3–4 days ago) so I didn’t think anything of it. Later when going to the bathroom I realized that some of the red marks were on my penis, and that they appeared to be growing more numerous on my groin. I “popped” a few of the white head looking things, and puss came out much like regular white heads. My lymph nodes in my groin are very tender, and the one on my left side is even somewhat painful when walking. I also have developed a small fever (99.6 F). I recently had the flu.

Thankfully none of the pictures I’ve found of herpes or syphilis really look like the marks I have. But I am still very concerned. I have had unprotected sex recently, but none of the partners (whom I am at least friends with each) have any symptoms, and one has even been checked. I am including pictures below… THEY ARE GRAPHIC PHOTOS (mods if this is inappropriate please tell me and I will be glad to pull them down).

Does anyone know what this is, and if so any suggestions to make it go away.

Please save the generic see a doctor advice, I’m already planning on it.

(per mod request I removed the actual photo of my penis and cropped the first photo, the marks on the penis look similar to those on my groin, but there are less of them and they are smaller…. If you’re very interested I can e-mail them to you, or you may be able to find them browsing my photobucket album).

hmmmmm…....... Honestly it looks kinda like razor burn. But I dunno. Despite your request I suggest you see a doctor, if it doesn’t go away at least.

When you shaved the pores got infected. I’d see the doc for some antibiotic cream or something.

Also number one tip – if you do have a rash on your groin don’t shave it just so that it’s easier to show the doc.

I wouldn’t rule out razor burn as a possibility, however, I’m assuming you don’t actually shave the head of your penis.
In which case, combined with the fever and swollen glands in the groin – this looks very similar to a mild herpetic outbreak. You should make an appointment with your doctor while you still have the rash so that they can take a culture.
In case it is an infection, you shouldn’t pick at it. You risk spreading it to healthy skin.

@TheOnlyNeffie I’ve never had an outbreak such as this before in my life, and what I’ve read says that herpes first outbreaks are usually pretty severe. That said, I do have that same concern and I am planning on getting it checked out asap.

Has anyone got experience with herpes or other major std’s that they can look at that and rule them out?

The combination of redness, pus and fever are the clear signs of a mild infection. Do see a doctor tomorrow. A nick or scratch from a razor might be the cause.

But cause is irrelevant; you need a diagnosis and some treatment, stat.

This could definitely be razor burn which has gained an infection from the razor. How often do you use that razor and how sanitary do you story such things are great questions to ask. Because razor burn is the cutting of the skin, an open “wound” like this could collect bacteria. And perhaps during sexual intercourse you got infected with something from your partners, not necessarily an STD. But it is good that you are concerned and seeing a doctor about it because it could be an STD. Make sure to use protection next time!!

@littlebeck30 It was a razor head I had used on my face probably 3 or so times (over the course of a month and a half), however I keep them in their open container thing on my sink or in the shower. I’m a guy, so my bathroom is admittedly not the cleanest, but I’ve not had issues past razor burn before.

I’m going to guess Molluscum Contagiosum. It is sort of kind of sexually transmitted, because the virus loves hot moist areas. But it is found in parts of the body that are not sexual organs also. Kids get it, similar to warts. Adults usually find it in their groin area, inside of thighs, etc. It is cantagious, so sex can pass it between two people,

Hmm, well just because it never happened before doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. The fever and pain could be due to the flu you experienced. I remember when I shaved my chest I had similar bumps on my chest. However, what concerns me is that the bumps have spread, indicating an infection of some kind

You know, I did not carefully enough. After the last post by @littleback, I think I am likely incorrect, because people rarely have a fever with the virus I mentioned. I think you should go tot the dermatologist and have it cultured, viral and bacterial. If it is where you shave it could folliculitis. No matter what I would not shave in that area until it resolves, and don’t have sex. If you do not get it diagnosed, and it goes away on its own within three weeks, and then reoccurs in the same place in the future, then herpes makes sense.

Would a urologist be an appropriate doctor to see?

JLeslie's avatar

@worriedaboutstd Better to see a dermotologist I think. But, a urologist probably does diagnose things like this also.

Polysporin and quit shaving.

If you don’t have polysporin you could try Hydrogen Peroxide and stop shaving. Should clear in a couple of weeks if it is simple bacterial folliculitis.

I have officially checked with everyone I’ve been with since last being checked myself. All of them claim to have been checked prior to, or shortly after being intimate with me. I have no reason to believe any of them would be lying to me. So I feel better about the odds of it not being an STD.

Use some Bacitracin or other antibiotic ointment. If it doesn’t clear up, you know what to do.

It honestly looks like a heat rash to me, but that doesn’t explain the fever. I used to get them whenever I did a lot of walking, like at an amusement park, and the inside of my legs rubbed together. I would get the bumps you described as well. My daughter gets heat rash simply from being too hot. Anyway, that was my thought as soon as I saw it – I am certainly not a doctor.

littlebeck30's avatar

@worriedaboutstd go to your regular doctor first and then he/she will tell you what it is and refer you to the correct doctor specialist if needed.

gailcalled's avatar

@worriedaboutstd: Keep checking your temperature. That is a good indicator of whether things are improving or not. Fever also indicates that you see a primary care or ER doctor.

Some people run at 99.6 all the time. Do you know that you are usually lower? Have you shaved before? because it really looks like razor burn. Or it could be flesh-eating disease.

My fever has subsided. I put cortizone on the affected areas as suggested by someone, and the redness has gone down significantly (but not away entirely). My lymph node is still tender, but less painful. The marks on the penis have not gone away, or gotten any worse. They’re just red marks, no white head looking things or sores, just red. Looking to make an appointment with a nearby urologist hopefully for this afternoon. My other option is one of those CVS minute clinic things, does anyone think that would be sufficient?

Added info. My current g/f, who is the last person I’ve been with, had a UTI recently. She is on antibiotics for it and it is clearing up. Could this be related to that?

worriedaboutstd's avatar

Well tests for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and herpes all came back negative. The red marks have completely subsided. No clue whatsoever what it was, just some other kind of infection I guess.

Razor burn. Lots of women get it on bikini lines in the summer.
