Do you dream in color?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) January 3rd, 2011

I checked…no one has asked this question quite this way!

I’ve heard that we only dream in black and white, but I dream in color all of the time. Do you? And what are your thoughts on the adage that we only dream in black and white? And why would “they” say that?

I’ve also heard you can’t feel pain in your dreams. It’s true that if I know I’m dreaming I can pinch myself and realize that I can feel the texture, but can’t feel the pain. However, I’ve also experienced pain in dreams when I don’t know I’m dreaming.

Dreaming freaks me out, too! Sleeping freaks me out if I think about it!

The notion that we only dream in black and white is a myth, albeit a common one. While there is a small percentage of people who claim to dream only in black and white, most people dream in color. I know I do.

I have had dreams that were vividly coloured. Maybe all my dreams aren’t coloured but some of them undoubtedly are.

Yes,I do.John Goodman looks best in color. ;)

I dream in colour all the time. My dreams are also very vivid and realistic, even when they’re wacky.

Sometimes I am aware of color in my dreams and sometimes I am not.

The idea of images in black and white is a fairly recent construct, dating (I think) from the beginning of photography. It would be much more unusual if we didn’t dream in color.

I wonder where this kind of stuff originates, and how it can be passed around with such “authority?” When I was in LaMaze with my first I remember that some MALE doctor stated that labor isn’t “real” pain. Talk about full of crap!

Never dreamed in black and white; always in color

why exactly would someone dream in black and white again??

I have also experienced much pain, as well. I feel everything (unfortunately)

Only when I’m dreaming about you.

Yes. The full EM spectrum, to be precise.

Yes. I hear sounds and smell smells too. In fact, I’ve even written a number of #1 hit songs in my dreams. If I had a “dream recorder,” I’d be an international electronic rock star now :-p

Always, and like HungryGuy, I smell and hear things too, as well as feel.

I dream in both color and in black & white. Seems to happen in phases. I will have several dreams in color and then several without color. As mentioned above, my dreams also tend to be very vivid. I have always had a natural ability for lucid dreaming, and I can remember dreams that have started in b&w which I have changed to color by focusing on what color something should be.

DominicX's avatar

Absolutely. I don’t think I’ve ever dreamt in black and white. I’m not sure why people would even make that claim…

I don’t remember my dreams let alone remember if they were in color or not. I wake up and think I was dreaming something….now what was it???
My husband is the vivid dreamer in our household. He dreams in color, he talks out loud in his dreams, and he fights in his dreams (I have the bruises to prove it).

I almost always dream in color. I feel pain in my dreams sometimes and wake up to find that the pain I was feeling actually occurs in real life. I’ve started to become more of a lucid dreamer, so I’ll actually have conversations between my dream self and the lucid me. It’s very odd, but kind of fun because I can change my scary dreams.

I dream in color all the time. Most of my dreams involve fictionalized versions of real-life experiences I’ve been through. Some of them are so vivid, it’s like reliving the event, which could be good or bad depending on what the original experience was like.

Yeah but not colour coordinated. I’ve had blue giraffes, yellow & pink striped zebras, an orange sky dotted with purple stars. Just like a Tim Burton movie, loud garish & easily forgotten!

Austinlad's avatar

Absolutely I do—and usually I’m aware of it.

JilltheTooth's avatar

@Austinlad : I’ll bet you dream in glitter and tassels, too. ;-)

@lucillelucillelucille lol and I’m sharing the John Goodman love <hugs>

my dreams are very vivid and all in colour, I really do “experience” whatever is happening in my dreams, and in the case of nightmares… well thats not a great thing. I have, many times, woken up crying because of whatever has happened in my dream, likewise I have woken myself up by laughing lol. I can’t imagine dreaming in black and white, or what that would feel like. It’s an interesting thought though. Hubby sometimes “announces” things in his sleep. He’s sound asleep and I’ll be reading or watching tv and out of the blue he’ll say something odd quite loudly, like “jammie donuts!” and then go straight back in to a deep sleep (snoring loudly as he does lol) @Dutchess_III I can understand your not liking the whole sleeping process, we are at our most vulnerable when we sleep. This is a great question honey,
hugs xx

mine are in technicolor, very vivid and real. I can also awaken from it and go back into it.
They mostly occur after I have had my biological awakening in the morning and go back to sleep. They will roll one to another and another. I also have premonitions at times. Reoccuring themes have been there since I was a kid. I just love dreaming.
ok, off to take a power nap!
