How much should it cost to insulate my double garage ceiling (attic) with a high R value insulation?

Asked by marialisa (464points) January 4th, 2011

I have about 340 square feet of uninsulated garage attic to insulate. I live in the midwest. What R value should I use and what insulation would suffice and not make me go broke? Who should I hire to install it? Any ideas? Thanks!

Do you have finished walls and ceiling in the garage, or exposed studs? Is there a room over the garage? This will determine whether or not you need batting or blown insulation.

I have exposed studs and am not putting blown in cause I am not going to put sheetrock up yet. Maybe never. I was thinking of friction fit batt with 4 mil poly. I have attic area for storage, no room.

I am following this b/c we are in the same situation. Plus, our bedrooms are over the garage and are colder than the rest of the house. There must be some solution that won’t break the bank.

I am getting various quotes from Licensed Handymen to Professional installers. Boy, shop around, prices vary greatly for labor. I also called my building inspecter and she told me what is to code. I was wondering where I could buy the fiberglass batting for a deal…

According to the US Department of Energy you are probably going to want insulation batts with a flame-resistant facing because you are going to leave it exposed.

It doesn’t appear too hard to install yourself if you’re moderately crafty. Perhaps buy a roll at a home supply store and give it a try?

I would have 4 mil poly on ceiling and would do the whole project myself if I physically could.:(
Eventually I would sheetrock it.
